Literacy

Phonics: Over the past few weeks, we have been learning 8 new phonemes (letter sounds). We have learnt the sound that they make and the visual cue that go with each. These phonemes include h, d, b, i, u, r, and l. It has been great to see the students locating these phonemes within their magic words and books that we have read as a class.

I encourage you to ask your student what sound each of these letters make and what the hand cue is that matches it.

Writing: We have been exploring narrative writing during our literacy sessions. We have looked at some mentor texts, including: The Magic Hat, The Rainbow Fish and Possum Magic. These texts have shown us how different authors introduce their characters and settings, as well as create a problem that can be resolved. Each Foundation student has been working hard on developing their own characters, settings and problems.

Numeracy

Over the past few weeks we have been working on reading, building and continuing patterns. We have been developing our understanding that patterns are something that repeats. We have had a blast hunting for patterns throughout the school, as well as making patterns with different objects around the classroom. We even took it one step further and had a play at creating patterns with musical instruments, it was great to see the students working as a team to create a musical pattern.

We have also been working on building our knowledge of position words. We have been learning how to use the words forwards, backward, left, right, in front, behind, next to, above etc. Playing with the Beebots has been a highlight of our week, the students followed some directions to find different locations on the maps.

Friendology

We have been lucky enough to join the Junior School over the past couple of weeks to develop our skills in meeting and engaging with friends. We have been discussing what makes us special and unique, and how we can be a good friend. We will be continuing to work with the Junior School across this term on deepening our social skills and developing connections across the levels.

Mother's Day Afternoon Tea

How lucky were we to have so many special people come down and visit us at school last Thursday to celebrate the important role you play in our lives! We are grateful to all of you and we hope that you had a lovely Mother's Day.
