School of Entrepreneurs

The nature of working in a school is that no sooner has something ended then the next iteration begins. From the senior school perspective there is no better example than HSC classes. As I wrote in the last edition we had two classes - Studies of Religion 1 and Design & Technology - complete their HSC exams. Congratulations to those students (and staff) who completed the exam, and now we wait until 15 December when results are released. In the meantime a new cohort of Year 10 students have already begun their HSC courses in Studies of Religion 1 and Design & Technology, while the Year 12 students are now aiming for the HSC examinations in all their courses in October 2023. It is the end of the beginning and the beginning of the end all at once!

In a similar theme it was a pleasure to hold a Year 12 information evening with students and parents on Wednesday 2 November. Rarely over the past few years have we been able to welcome parents into the school for a gathering - what a milestone! During the evening I spoke about the “first of the lasts” for Year 12 students. They now have the end in sight, even if that sight is littered with obstacles, stresses and exams. It is also lightened by events unique to a Year 12 cohort: the last Christmas holiday break; the last retreat; the last exam to name just a few. We look forward to sharing this journey together.

Transition will be the key word as we move to the end of the term and year. Each of our cohorts will be “moving up”, and there will be associated big and small adjustments to be made. Principle among those are a fresh start and an increase in expectations. Parents, one of the best supports you can make is helping your child get the little things in place before they leave for school. Right uniform? Check. Food and drink packed? Check. Books, pens and a charged computer? Check. The result of these in place is a day focused on learning rather than chasing over the small items.

As the year winds down our expectations will not. Learning will continue to the final day of the term, and students held to account for meeting the expectations that exist throughout the year. There will also be a range of functions, activities and excursions that will celebrate the closure of the year. Additionally, school reports will be published within the next two weeks and the complete the year you will be invited to attend a Student led Conference with your child on Wednesday 14 December (3pm - 6pm) and Thursday 15 December (9am - 3pm).

Finally, each cohort has been asked to donate items to our Vinnies Christmas appeal. If you haven’t heard about this from your daughter or son please check in with them and please give generously.

From Year 12…

Visual Arts

Year 11 Visual Arts students explored the genre of landscape last term, with an emphasis on the layering of various mixed media techniques. Student's were influenced by a place of importance and in this case, drew their inspiration from the Philippines!

From Year 10…

Legacy projects

“Legacy projects” are the culmination of the Life Design course in years 7 to 10. Year 10 students, working in teams, are currently designing and proposing projects that, when implemented, will leave a legacy for the College. Project proposals include:

  • Basketball competition - running every Wednesday morning for students
  • Peer support program - Year 11 students supporting Year 7 in 2023
  • And a host of other ideas

The project below, the St Luke’s Recipe Book, is the brainchild of Abi Witherspoon, Naida Nijat and Maya Islam. I encourage you not only to read the invitation that has been sent to students and staff, but to also respond. If you would like to contribute please send your recipe to stlukesstage5parents@parra.catholic.edu.au

St Luke's Recipe Book

As a part of our year 10 legacy project, we have decided to bring together the school’s nationalities and families through a recipe e-book that displays various recipes from different backgrounds. You may choose to contribute a recipe of your own, it can be traditional, a family recipe, or just a dish/drink that your family enjoys and would like to share. If you do include a recipe/(s) please include your family name/the student’s name, the name of the dish, the ingredients and amount needed, the method and any other tips/serving suggestions if you have any. You can also include a photo of the dish if you like by including a link to a pdf image (this is completely optional). If you have some recipes you would like to submit we would prefer if you submitted 3 just in case we get submissions for 10 of the same dish so we can have some variety. We would be very grateful if you contributed 3 recipes and thank you in advance.
