Earlier this month our Year 11 students said goodbye to year 11 and started their transition program as Year 12 students. As part of this transition, they had their first assembly.
In the assembly our 2023 College Captains were announced. After an extensive selection process involving written applications, interviews, videos and finally a student/staff vote we were super excited to announce and congratulate:
College Captains – Owen and Luke
College Vice Captains – Georgia and Madison
We wish our College Captains all the very best in their new leadership roles in 2023.
We also extend our thanks and encouragement to all the students who submitted applications. All the applications were outstanding.
Congratulations to Cydni (2023 Year 12 VCE VM) who has just been successful with her application to become a Youth Ambassador.
Youth Ambassadors are a group of young people aged 12–25 living, studying and working across East Gippsland who are committed to create change in their community. The Youth Ambassadors have a unique opportunity to influence, lead change and to assist Council in understanding the needs of young people.
Becoming a Youth Ambassador provides a platform for young people to discuss issues, create and lead projects for young people, have meaningful engagement with the established Council and have a say about the future of their community. Their mission is to ensure young people are engaged and feel valued as citizens in the community.
Youth Ambassadors participate in free training and development opportunities, community consultations and events as well as develop and implement their own action plan with goals and ambitions they work towards achieving each year.
More details of the program can be found at: https://www.eastgippsland.vic.gov.au/community/youth
Year 10 and 11 students went to Monash University to participate in an Elisa assay, and toured the Aquacore facilities and Micro Medical Imaging laboratories, as well as the Monash halls of Residence.
As part of our 2023 transition program at Bairnsdale Secondary College, all 2023 Year 12 students are participating in a 3-day study camp.
The camp helps to be prepare students to start their Year 12 journey in a positive and well-resourced manner. Students, both VCE and VCE VM (VCAL), participated in a number of activities which were academically centred, team building based and have a health and well-being component.
The 3 day camp program included:
- Sessions with Elevate Education focussing on study skills
- Our College Careers Practitioners presenting an overview of the careers support and resources available to students
- Preparatory lessons from the teacher they will have in Year 12 for their chosen subjects.
- Activities to support team building skills
Last Thursday night our Year 12 Class of 2022 graduated. It was a celebration of the end of 13 years of schooling. Each student was presented with a gift and certificate. Included with the gift was a USB with all types of important information for life after secondary school. There was two photo presentations, the first one being a Prep photo, Year 7 photo and Year 12 photo for each student.
The second presentation was a Then and Now Photo slide show. Our students and their families did an amazing job recreating images.
Our College Captains Paige and Bree had their very last speech and some great music was performed by our Year 12 band members. Professional photos were taken and they will be emailed to the students when made available to the Senior Hub.
Our Senior 2022 students attended graduation last week and our new Year 12 students have participated in two weeks of an intensive Head Start Program. The majority of students have settled into the new role of senior students and are learning about the expectations surrounding the new Vocational Major curriculum. They are finishing off their Intermediate year with a 3 day camp on the Banksia Peninsula where they will continue to explore the attributes of team work, leadership, motivation and determination. We look forward to working with these students in 2023.
Our new Unit 1 and 2 students begin next week and we are looking forward to moulding these students into our first Vocational Major Year 11 students. We have developed a program that will involve quite a bit of theoretical learning as well as testing their ability in being creative and hands on. We look forward to getting to know these new students.
A big congratulations to Lilly Cunningham for organising a morning tea to thank the many people within our school and wider community who have provided support to the VCAL program in 2022. The scones, lemon butter, berry jam, and slices were delicious…
Finally a thank you to Nat from the library who has provided a happy holiday home for the chickens during the school break. We hear that they have settled in well despite an attempted break out over the fence. They have settled into a routine in their new home and are busy providing Nat and her family with farm fresh eggs.
The Year 10 Students have been enjoying sunny days and using the table tennis tables and 6 square down ball.
