Energy Breakthrough

On the weekend of 18th November through to 20th November 14 Bairnsdale Secondary College students attend the Energy Breakthrough Race in Maryborough.

The students travelled from Bairnsdale on Thursday, arriving in Maryborough and setting up camp ready for a busy day on the Friday.

On Friday the students were required to do a team presentation. The presentation went for about 30 minutes and included details of how they designed the bike, why and what their motivation was for the design. All members of the team answered questions from the panel and gave an excellent account of their reasons and motivation for their entry.

After the presentation the students then attended the scrutiny session with the marshals and officials, who went over the bike and ensured that all safety requirements were met along with the bike meeting the required specifications. Then it was on to the 3 hours of trials on Friday night where our students did very well, perfecting their driver changes and night driving on the track.

We were all ready for the big race starting on Saturday, but the weather had other ideas and ultimately we made the decision to come home early which was disappointing, but our students handled it with the same positive attitude they demonstrated throughout the whole weekend.

The horrendous weather resulted in the officials requesting other schools to move their campsites. Our students were amazing and volunteered to assist those schools to carry their equipment, help set up in the new location and generally assist. We have had several schools call and say thank you for the assistance. It is been wonderful to hear positive feedback about our students.

Congratulations to all the students who attended the Energy Breakthrough event and for representing our College in such a positive light.

Melissa’s work also caught the attention of many show-goers which earnt her the annual Margaret Alexander’s ‘People’s Choice’ Award for 2022. Melissa’s name will be engraved on the annual trophy and it will be in her keeping until the 2023 awardee receives the same honour. Congratulations to all students who exhibited, it was noted that the standard of work was of a very high calibre. Fantastic effort.
