MY CHILDCARE STORY

This year I got the opportunity to have a work placement as a part of my VCAL course. At the start of February I had my first day at Storyhouse Early Learning Centre. I tell you, I was terrified the first time I went into the nursery, thirteen babies! Six sleeping, three crying and I had only just walked into the room. My room leaders and my educators have taught me so much over the course of the year. They've taught me to have patience, the responsibility of working in childcare and of course, working together as a team. I had found my happiness.  Working with babies, as hard as the job is, it's always so rewarding towards the end.

Seeing them smile and learn has made me appreciate being with them in such an early year of their life. Through the year I would sometimes be with the toddlers to see the difference of the rooms, it's VERY different! It's so much more peaceful and calming because they are a lot more mature than newborns. A few weeks ago, I had an assessor come in to observe me in the toddler room to see how well I have performed in my placement. I did an aboriginal painting activity with them to teach the children the meaning of the flag and its colours. She was very impressed at how much I had learnt in only a year of working there. She admired my independence and saw how well I spent my time with the children.

I passed with flying colours and said she sees a very bright future for me in childcare. How right she was, later that day my boss offered me to be a casual worker at Story house! I tell you I screamed with excitement, I love the people I work with, I love the children I teach and look after. I couldn't be more grateful to be at such a beautiful place. I'm happy to have found my place and where I really belong.
