As Term 2 draws to a close I have been reflecting on what has been an incredibly busy, but also such a warm and welcoming first semester at Huntingtower. I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to get to know students and many parents and I hope that the 1:1 appointments have provided support and direction for students as they start to think about life beyond their secondary schooling.
Senior secondary school, and particularly the VCE, can be overwhelming and puts a lot of pressure on students, but it is imperative that students and families understand that the ATAR and subject prerequisites only provide a gateway for students to continue on to further study. Once students have begun their post school journey, universities are more concerned with the subjects studied and results achieved there.
So, while it is important for students to work hard and achieve their best while at school, there are endless pathway options for them to follow after the ATARs and university and TAFE offers have been released. Please feel free to contact me for information or assistance about the many pathway options for students.
Early Entry Programs
Many universities, including Latrobe, ACU and Swinburne, offer early entry programs that can be applied for throughout June-September (depending on the university). Applying for these courses means that students may receive an offer to a course based on their year 11 results and co-curricular involvement prior to sitting exams in October/November, which can alleviate a lot of pressure. Information regarding early entry programs can be found on Firefly here.
Reminders – Work Experience
Work experience for year 10 students is happening in week two of term 3 and there are still many students who are yet to find a placement and/or return their forms. If you are struggling to find a place, please contact me as soon as possible, as we have some opportunities you may be interested in. Work experience arrangement forms can be found here and need to be completed and returned to me ASAP.
Work experience is also highly recommended for students in years 11 and 12, as these cohorts missed out over the previous couple of years. If you would like to complete work experience during a week of your school holidays, please do so and complete the work experience arrangement form.

Students interested in studying Medicine
There is a page on Firefly that has a short webinar and some detailed information outlining entry into Medicine courses. For any students in years 10-12 who have expressed interest in studying Medicine, I highly recommend that you read through the information provided on this page and contact me if you have any questions about the process. To understand pathways into graduate Medicine programs, please see the “Science as a pathway to Medicine” information provided by Monash University here.
Please keep up to date with information on the Future Pathways Firefly page, and particularly the weekly careers newsletter, which is uploaded each Friday. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a restful break and I look forward to seeing you refreshed in Term 3!
