Magis report

What a week it has been for Magis!

Monday

Years 7, 8 and 9 students met for a formation meeting in preparation for the Creative Edge and Da Vinci Decathlon competitions which will commence in Term 3. Students nominating for Term 3 competitions need to get their applications in as soon as possible – as Teams will be finalised over the next week.

Some of our Novice debaters (pictured below) met to brainstorm arguments in preparation for Round 6 of WADL Debating. They are preparing to debate on whether there should be a requirement for equal media coverage of men’s and women’s sport.

There are a few rescheduled debates which will be taking place over the next couple of weeks – and so all teams are reminded that they must check the WA Debating League website for up-to-date fixtures, as well as their respective Teams pages.

The day finished with an exciting campaign for the Year 8 Dungeons and Dragons Club! Special thanks to Club Coordinator Mr Connellan for his continued support.

Tuesday

The final of the Homeroom Magis Challenge was held on Tuesday morning, with Year 11 and 12 students taking part in a quiz which tested their Humanities, Art, Languages and Literature (HALL) general knowledge. Was great to see the Senior School students getting into House spirit! Congratulations to the Year group winners:

  • Year 11: James Mitchell (Kooly)
  • Year 12: Benjamin Ottobrino (Loyola); Corrado Fraulini (Kooly); and Thomas Linsten (Kooly)

That completes the HALL challenge for Term 2. Congratulations to the overall challenge winner - Koolyangarra House.

One of the College’s Novice Debating Team’s competed in a rescheduled round on Tuesday evening. The adjudicator commended the students on their grasp of a difficult topic – which showed a maturity well beyond their years. Congratulations debaters on the win!

Thursday

Our Year 7 and 8 Magis Option students displayed their Personal Projects in an exhibition held at the Thomas More Exhibition Centre. This program is based on the International Baccalaureate but modified to suit younger students and the timeframe within which the College Option program is run.

Students were challenged to choose a project related to a major interest or passion of theirs, and the results were outstanding! Projects ranged from a 3D model car engine; the creation of an animated movie; an experiment in mould; a dive into family ancestry; advice on cryptocurrency; a study of nature; traditional family recipes; dress design; the list goes on.

The enthusiasm in which the students discussed their projects and the professional way they were executed, was evidence of many months of hard work and planning and I congratulate all the Year 7 and 8 Magis students on a memorable exhibition. What a wonderful achievement.

Friday

Our Community Mass was prepared by Magis students. As a community, we continue to pray for Mr Miller who has given so much to Magis students; may God bring healing and strength to Mr Miller. Special thanks to Ms Lumley and everyone else involved in the beautiful liturgy – and to the staff, students and parents who came in support and celebration. What a lovely way to finish the week.

Another big week, next week – with the House Public Speaking Grand Final taking place on Monday evening, the launch of the Creative Writing Competition, Mock Trials; Round 6 of WADL Debating and much, much more! You can keep up to date with Magis and Altiora events by following the Term 2 calendar – which can be accessed by clicking on the link below.
