Year 11 Dinner Dance
The much-anticipated Year 11 Dinner Dance was held at Bendat State Basketball Stadium in the Ellis Room on Friday 10 June. It was a wonderful opportunity to get dressed up and enjoy the company of friends and peers, sharing a meal together and then dancing the night away. In these COVID times it’s always a relief to have these events go ahead. It was a much-needed celebration for students after their first Semester in Year 11. I must say, I really enjoyed the night!
Thanks to the College staff and Homeroom teachers who joined us or helped set up, as well as members of the Student Representative Council who were also there to help celebrate.

Calling all our keen bakers!
This year John XXIII College will be hosting the IGSSA WA Rowing Head of the River. The event provides a wonderful opportunity to display the supportive community that we have at the College, as well as fundraising for the John XXIII College Rowing Club. We would love all members of the College to assist the Club by baking up a storm in their kitchen and donating any baked goodies such as cakes, cupcakes, biscuits and slices.
Year 8 Guest Speaker- Paul Litherland
Paul Litherland from Surf Online Safe delivered an online presentation to the Year 8 students on Thursday 16 June during a wellbeing period.
He discussed how students could think and act safe when using popular social media apps such as Snapchat/SnapMap and TikTok, as well as covering the Intimate Image Abuse legislation. With a wealth of experience having worked as a WA Police Officer for 20 years, including within the Technology Crime Investigation Unit, Paul offered some good advice to students about their online safety, helping them to become better informed and more aware of their surroundings when they post, whilst still interacting freely online with their peers.

Year 9 Outdoor Education Camp
The Semester One, Year 9 Outdoor Education Camp was a fantastic experience for all involved. Although tasked with some tough weather conditions, the students showed great resilience and spirit throughout the week. This was a brand new water-based camp for the Year 9 course which took place at Rottnest Island and Ern Halliday Recreation Camp. The stunning scenery at Rottnest Island catered for activities including snorkeling, cycling, and hiking, and students participated in adventure activities at Ern Halliday including archery, orienteering and team building. Students were also able to apply skills acquired during classroom learning which included Trangia cooking, tent construction, minimal impact techniques and many more.
The following anecdotes are some words from students on their experience:
The Outdoor Ed camp was a very enjoyable experience equipping me with a broad range of skills for camping. We first took the ferry to Rottnest Island where we took part in a range of activities including snorkeling, riding, and hiking. We then took the ferry back to Hillarys where we met the bus to take us to the camp site. Upon arrival at the site, we put our stuff away and indulged in a delicious barbeque prepared by the teachers. We then went on to set up our tent and hang out around the fire before night. In the morning we packed up our tents and cooked a delicious meal on the Trangia's in small groups. Throughout the day we participated in a range of tasks with our groups including archery, team building and orienteering with each task challenging us in a different way. Overall, I found the Outdoor Education camp to be an amazing experience challenging us in many ways, while still providing and enjoyable and fun atmosphere.
Luke Green, Year 9 Campion
On the Year 9 Outdoor Ed Camp, we went to Rottnest for the day and then camped at Ern Halliday in Hillarys overnight. It was an incredibly fun and unique experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it, even the challenging bits. We started by catching the ferry to Rottnest, which was lots of fun as it was relaxing, and everyone was excited for the day to come. In Rottnest, we snorkeled, despite rough conditions, a cycle where we saw amazing scenery, and a hike to Geordie Bay. The ferry ride on the way back was my absolute favourite part because it wasn't rough, and it was at sunset. I brought my disposable camera and took some photos and the view of the sunset over the open ocean was incredible. When we got to Ern Halliday, we immediately started setting up tents, had a barbeque for dinner, which was delicious, and sat around the campfire before heading to bed. The next, day, we made breakfast with the Trangia's which was another one of my favourite activities because I love cooking and we got the opportunity to spend some time with close friends from other groups. After packing up our tents, we spent the day doing archery, team building and orienteering. Overall, I loved the camp and would definitely do something like it again.
Bianca Petsos, Year 9 Loreto
The students conducted themselves in a mature and positive manner. A huge thank you to all involved; especially our staff attending this camp: Ms Lorrelle Fortune, Ms Melinda Toleman, Ms Ella Briendley, Mr Adam Read, Ms Clare Galati, Mr James McLaughlin and Mr Daniel Maher. Their commitment and involvement was greatly appreciated.

Year 8 Reflection Day
Year 8 students participated in their Reflection Day on Monday 13 June. The theme was ‘Healthy Relationships’. Students had the opportunity to unpack the terms Social Justice and Human Dignity by reflecting on the teaching of Jesus and the parable of the Good Samaritan. The Year 8’s were then encouraged to apply this understanding of human dignity to the issues of reconciliation and cyber bullying.
To begin this special occasion, we were extremely lucky to have Fr Edmond Nixon CSsR leading the Mass, he delivered a beautiful homily illustrating the importance of seeing the dignity in not only ourselves but others around us. A highlight for many was then listening to Scott Darlow, a Yorta Yorta descendent, and singer-songwriter. Scott shared stories related to his Indigenous culture and challenged students to help facilitate reconciliation and understanding. He spoke about empathy as the foundation for any real change and encouraged each student to adopt, and practice daily, attributes of his key acronym FLUTE - Forgiveness, Love, Understanding, Tolerance and Empathy.
Some Year 8’s had the following to say about the day:
I think reflection day was a good opportunity for us to think about our lives and how we can grow more as a person.
Reflection day enabled me to gather an understanding of developing healthy relationships and building human dignity.
From the Mass in the morning, to the cyber safety session in the afternoon, the day allowed me to reflect upon myself, my religion and values, and the people around me. These sessions also gave me a deeper insight into the true meaning of human dignity.
I particularly enjoyed the mass in the morning, Father's homily in Mass was interesting and informed us about how humans are all created equally by God, and how God wants us to live.
I learnt many things on the Reflection Day. The day covered various important topics such as our connection with God, race equality and the importance of being cyber safe and how to deal with cyber safety.
I enjoyed Scott Darlow coming in to speak to us; he was very funny, relatable and a great musician. The session was informative and very eye-opening, especially to Australia’s history and the First Nations Peoples.
It was a pleasure to see all students enthusiastically involved in our Reflection Day and the behaviour was outstanding. A special mention must be made to the Homeroom staff and our various student leaders for their help during the day.

Year 10 Outdoor Education Camp
At the Year 10 Outdoor Education camp students were able to put their skills to work during their expedition to the Margaret River region this past week. Activities involved hiking (some groups up to 20km in day with a 20kg pack to carry full of gear for themselves and the group), camping, cooking, abseiling, high ropes and general group interactions. The importance of this course and, in particular, the camping experience should not be underestimated. The wealth it provides to students self-esteem and their appreciation for our natural environment is enormous indeed. They will carry memories from this experience for thief lifetime.

ACC Hockey
Our hockey girls played superbly in their games at the ACC Hockey Challenge this week. They were undefeated in all their preliminary rounds to secure their place in the grand final at the end of the day against Guildford Grammar. The game finished in a draw, meaning the winner would be decided by penalty strokes. Unfortunately, our team was the first miss, costing them the title for day. This is still an incredible achievement, given our team have a lot of junior players. They will be a force to reckon with in the coming years. Thank you to Miss Jodi Power for all her time and effort coaching our hockey girls this year.
Next week, on Monday the 20 June, it will be our boys turn to take to the turf. Last year the boys lost the semi final to penalty strokes, so we have high hopes for them this year. We wish all the boys and their coach, Mr Joshua Bowen the best of luck in their games to come.
SSWA Junior Hockey
Our two junior Years 7-9 Hockey teams will be competing in the Ross Meadows Hockey Shield on Monday 20 June. Thank you to Mr Adrian Sims and Miss Jessica Pillera for their time and effort coaching our teams this year.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Leila Barker who competed in the Oceania Athletics Championships last week in Mackay Queensland. This competition hosted athletes from 22 different countries. She had a great pole vaulting competition jumping 3.50m to claim the Gold medal. This was a great experience for Leila, giving her the opportunity to compete alongside some big names in Athletics.
