Staff Professional Development

Last Monday for our Curriculum Day all staff at GSSC participated in a Cultural Awareness Experience. Staff went on site visits to Rumbalara, Gurudwara Sahib Temple, and the Afghan Mosque.

We all learnt many new things from the day that will support us when teaching students from other cultures. We extend our sincere thanks to staff, Elders, and community volunteers from each of these establishments for providing us with a warm welcome and for facilitating the day. We extend a special thanks to the Afghan Mosque who hosted us for a shared lunch on the day.

The next Curriculum Day will take place on Wednesday 7th September. All students who are not undertaking the GAT will not be required at school. All students enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3-4 sequence will be required attend school to sit Sections A and B. Senior VCAL students will be required to attend school to sit Section A. Further information will be communicated through the Compass portal in the coming weeks.

Events

Last Thursday the 12th August the GSSC Music Department hosted an Ensemble Concert in our Theatrette. It was such a wonderful display of talent by our students who performed before a large crowd of very proud parents and family members who filled the Theatrette. The joy on our students’ faces showed how proud they were to finally be able to showcase their talents to an audience. Congratulations to our music department, Lindy Tennant, Bryce McMurray, Steve Sargant, Charlotte Drinnan, Amanda Eagle, Hannah McGee, Fiona Morphett, Bruce Archibald and whilst Lachlan Gallacher wasn’t able to be there, I know he also supported these students to perform at their best. Without the support and dedication of these teachers, our students would not have the opportunities to learn a variety of musical instruments and show their singing and instrumental musical talents. See the pictures under Music News in this newsletter!

On Monday 15th August GSSC students had the opportunity to participate in the College Athletics Carnival. It was wonderful to see the brilliant House colour costumes our students were wearing, which added to the tremendous House Spirit and sportsmanship demonstrated on the day.

There were many sporting achievements and milestones performed by our students, and fabulous participation by all involved. I would like to thank our Director of Sport, Elisha Fiddes, for her exemplary organisation of the event, and all of the staff who supported on the day in order to make the event possible. See our next newsletter for all the results!

On August 16th, the GSSC Careers Team took nearly fifty Year 12 students to Melbourne to visit RMIT University and La Trobe University. This was an extremely productive day for our students as the excursion plays an important part of their decision-making process and provides beneficial and supporting information about Universities and University life.

Year 7 2023

We look forward to welcoming our future students and families to our ‘Year 7 2023 Family Transition Evening’ on Wednesday 24th August. Information will be shared regarding Year 6-7 Transition Program, Year 7 Curriculum, Bus Services and Neighbourhood Selection Processes. The Year 7 Enrolment Packs will also be provided to families on the night. Families can RSVP via Compasstix by Monday 22nd August.

SEAs

A reminder to our students and families that the SEA Reports were published on Compass on Tuesday 17th. We encourage all of our families to read the SEA Reports and engage in positive discussions around areas of success and areas for future growth.
