STEAM News

Welcome to another term in the STEAM room.

Foundation students have been busy planting bean seeds in our plastic bottle greenhouses. We have been discussing what plants need to grow and we are keeping a bean diary to monitor their growth over the term. Thank you to all the parents who sent in bottles, and to Oscar H (6B), Nikki b (6C) and Austin W (6C) for helping the Foundation students plant their bean seeds.

Year 1 students began the semester by exploring how dinosaurs are named and the meaning of their scientific names. They are currently designing their own dinosaur based on a mixture of scientific names.

Year 2 students have observed our live mealworms using magnifying glasses and bug catchers. There was much excitement when they could see these living creatures up close. Students have learnt about the mealworms’ life cycle and will be monitoring their growth each week by keeping observational notes and annotated drawings.

Year 3 & 4 students were introduced to Lightbot, an app which teaches them the basics of coding. Students must use blocks (icons) to program Lightbot (a robot) to light up all the blue squares. For Lightbot to make it through the various puzzles students are learning some common coding constructs and are becoming familiar with the following terms, sequences, procedures, loops and debugging.

Year 5 students are now in the final stages of putting together their interactive planet posters. They have coded their posters using Scratch and are currently connecting them to a Makey Makey circuit board. We look forward to showcasing all the fine work that has gone into these projects to the whole school in the next few weeks.

Year 6 students are finishing off their earthquake research reports, and they will also be presenting them to their peers in the next few weeks.
