Principal Report, Year Level & OSHC News

From the Principal...
Term 3 promises to be a busy and exciting term with a range of incursions and excursions across the school, Book Week dress up parade in Week 7, House Athletics, Bike Education, and the Year 3 Camp. The Korean cultural morning will be held on the 25th of August with many activities for students to engage with. This includes cooking, dancing and calligraphy - just to name a few! The parents and friends have also been busy planning their Neon Social Night, as well as our Father’s Day and Special Friend’s coffee morning. I hope to see many of you, at both of these events!
The biggest event on the term calendar is the whole school STEAM showcase. This is to be held on Tuesday August 9th at 6pm. The showcase will be held across the school in classrooms, the hall and our specialist areas. Families are invited to attend on the night and apart from spending time in their own child’s classroom, you are welcome to visit other areas of the school. The showcase will run for an hour from 6 -7 pm. Prior to that, there will be a Year 3 camp briefing at 5:30 pm in the Korean portable.
Student Led Conferences
Although our student led conferences are some time away, I felt it was important to inform parents of the date and provide an explanation about their purpose. The conferences will be held on Tuesday 6th September in your child’s classroom.
The conferences are designed to promote student voice and agency. They are an excellent opportunity for students to showcase learning and to explain their personalised learning goals to parents and carers. It is also another opportunity for families to connect with the school, providing them with a better understanding of the learning taking place at their child’s year level. The booking process will be confirmed at a later date.
Assembly
Whole school assemblies are being held every Monday afternoon at 3pm. Students will be sharing their learning and parents are welcome to attend when their child is on the stage. So far, we have seen the Year 1 students sharing their learning on fairy tales and the Year 6 students conducting a persuasive debate, around which celebrity should survive a fictious plane crash with only one parachute available. Both items were highly entertaining!
COVID 19
The school is continuing to follow the Education and Health Department guidelines by encouraging staff and students to wear masks while indoors, ensuring air purifiers are on in classrooms, air ventilation is occurring, hand sanitizer is available, social distancing is occurring where possible and encouraging that Rapid Antigen Tests are taken when students display symptoms.
Rapid Antigen Tests will continue to be distributed to every student and staff members.
A New Agreement
On Monday 18 July 2022, the Fair Work Commission approved a new school’s agreement which will commence operation from Monday 25 July 2022 with a nominal expiry date of Wednesday 31 December 2025. There have been several briefings relating to changes outlined that differ from our previous agreement. Aside from pay scale changes, there was a focus on teacher workload and providing time in lieu. This is extraordinarily complex in a school setting and our local network of schools are supporting each other with the implementation of the new agreement. There will be some operational changes that occur which may impact future school activities. Teacher professional practice days will continue with one approved by school council this afternoon for Tuesday 6th September. This will be a pupil free day as recommended by the department. this will also coincide with the Student Led Conferences.
Enrolments for 2023 - Enrolments are due NOW!
2023 Foundation enrolments are open. Enrolment forms can be collected at the Office or found on our website. If you have a child turning 5 by April 30, 2023, please complete an enrolment form and bring in a copy of your child’s birth certificate and immunisation record and proof of residence in the school zone and we will process the enrolment. It helps us enormously with planning, if we have a clear indication of enrolments as early as possible.

Pupil Free Day - Tuesday 6th September
With the launch of the new education agreement – it is stated that schools will conduct one professional practice day this term.
It is recommended that all year levels should schedule this day altogether on the one day.
Our professional practice day is scheduled and approved by school council for Tuesday September 6th. This is also the date set for student led conferences.
Therefore, Tuesday September 6th will be a pupil free day

Pyjama Day - Friday 22nd July
It was lovely to see so many people in pyjamas last Friday. If you don't know why we dressed up, it was for the National Pyjama Foundation, which with the money raised, supports kids in foster care.
Kids in care often bounce from home to home and to different schools which negatively affects their ability to learn and thrive. Without support, this can lead to a disconnect in school and mental health issues which can have effects, even in adulthood.
The money we have raised also allows community mentors called “Pyjama Angels” to be found, trained, and then matched with a child in care. Together they read books, play educational games, do homework and so much more. Most importantly, they empower them with learning, life skills and the confidence to reach their full potential.
With all that in mind, we set out with a goal to raise $500. We are proud and excited to say that we smashed that goal and through your generosity and kind hearts raised
$2,693! WHAT AN AMAZING EFFORT OPS!!!!!!!
This is a wonderful cause and goes towards supporting kids like you and me. We want to thank you all so much for your kindness and support.

Term 3 Cyber Safety
The students have really enjoyed attending their Cyber Safety incursions for Term 3 and are gaining a lot of knowledge as they navigate their way through a digital world. I know in the junior classes both the students and teachers are finding it very hard to stop singing the song we learnt about staying safe online! And how exciting to hear Ormond PS mentioned during the incursion, with Henry of 1B’s suggested username for Ollie (Legomaster75) being selected as Ollie’s favourite!
Topics for Foundation to Year 2 students included how to keep information private, what is a digital footprint and 'username/ password' best practise. Year 3 to 6 students explored and unpacked topics such as cyber bullying, the power of the upstander and how to navigate uncomfortable situations.
Keep an eye out for the ‘Parent & Carer Tip Sheet’ that should have come home with your child and is available on compass.
The Term 3 parent online session is just 3 weeks away!

Book Week - Dress Up August 24th
Book week is August 20th-26th August.
Ormond Primary will celebrate its love of books with a dress up day on Wednesday 24th August.
Everyone is encouraged to come dressed as their favourite book character or they can bring along one of the props mentioned in the book. Students will hear this year’s short-listed books and complete activities on the day.
Below is a link of dress-up ideas for inspiration.
Happy reading everyone!
MS Read-a-thon
This August, Ormond Primary School will be participating in the MS Readathon!
The MS Readathon inspires kids to read as much as they can, all for one incredible cause. The rules are simple. Read whatever you like, as much as you can, throughout the month of August. Best of all, by joining our quest, not only will you awaken a love of reading, you will also be helping kids who have a parent with multiple sclerosis.
But we need YOUR support. Will you please sponsor your child to read for the MS Readathon?
You can donate or register your child by clicking on this link: https://www.msreadathon.org.au/fundraisers/ormond-primary-school-3204
If you register asap, you could receive an MS Readathon t-shirt. There are lots of resources on the website including sponsorship forms. When registered, you can access an email template so you can contact relatives who may want to encourage your child to read and sponsor them.
We would love to raise as much money as possible for this wonderful cause. So let’s all get reading!
Your donation will fund vital support services for people living with MS and other neurological conditions, like the amazing Family Camps where kids can spend time with other kids who understand what it's like to have a parent with MS. These camps help families living with MS to spend quality time together and learn more about multiple sclerosis.
Thank you so much for your support!
Foundation News
The Foundation students attended an Incursion, “The Superhero in You”, that made students discover that anyone can be a superhero, including themselves. All they need are the everyday superpower skills of listening, voice, feelings, kindness, action and thinking. Together, the students were able to build strong self-esteem, self-awareness, and a strong sense of community to achieve meaningful relationships together.
Lolly and Em were exceptional in demonstrating to the students on how and when everyone can use their superpowers!
Year 2 News
On the 22nd of June, 2B and 2A went to the Edithvale Wetlands to learn more about water. 2B went to a bird lookout to spot different birds we haven't seen before. I saw swans, ducks, birds and parrots using the binoculars they gave us. At the Education Centre, there was a model of the bay. They showed us what happens if you leave dog poo on top of a drain and how it will go through the pipes and into the ocean. There was also a puzzle which helped us learn more about the water cycle.

On Wednesday 22nd June, the Year 2 students went to Edithvale wetlands to celebrate the end of our unit of Water! We went to the bird hide. Ben gave us binoculars to look at the birds. There were a few different birds there. We also saw a model of how water flows and saw how if you litter how the rubbish will effect our water system. After that we put together a jigsaw puzzle. It was so much fun, and I hope to visit again.

Year 3 News
This term, Year 3 students have been focusing on information reports in writing lessons. They enjoyed a collaborative sorting activity focusing on writing structure including Title, Introduction, Description and Conclusion.
In Mathematics, the students enjoyed tuning in to our unit on Time by completing the ‘1 minute challenge’ where they had to estimate how many push ups/jumping jacks they could do, how many times they could write their name and other activities in 1 minute before trying and then comparing their estimates with their results.
Students are starting to get excited and curious about Year 3 camp (August 22nd-23rd) - a reminder that there will be a brief information session about camp in the Korean room prior to the STEAM night on August 9th.
Finally, we hope you enjoy some happy class snaps from the Pyjama Day from the other week which was a lot of fun (and fortunately nice and sunny!).
Year 4 News
On Wednesday last week, Year 4 had a lot of fun doing science because it was all about tomatoes. Everyone got a tomato to share with their table partner and a sheet each. We had to cut out every square on the sheet and arrange the squares from the start of a tomato plant life cycle to the end of the life cycle. But everyone was in shock when we found out a tomato life cycle can start anywhere. Can you believe that! We then had to accurately draw the cross section of the inside of the tomato. After that we all got to enjoy the tomatoes but some people got a little carried away. In the end it was a lot of fun.

Year 5 News
In Year 5 we have been thinking about ways we can turn a mistake into a learning opportunity, as well as the mindset we can apply to work through and overcome any challenges we might face! No one is immune to making mistakes – we are human, after all! But if we simply apologize, ignore, and carry on as before, we are in danger of repeating the same errors. When we begin to view our mistakes as learning opportunities, we open ourselves up to a different perspective.
In well-being we have been learning about having a growth mindset. We did an activity called Flip that flop where we wrote something that was a flop (a mistake) and what we did to make it a flip (turning it into a learning opportunity). - Michael 5C
In well-being we have been learning about having a growth mindset. We did an activity called Flip that Flop where we thought of a time we had made a mistake and how it felt, then we thought about what we could do to turn it into a learning opportunity. Having a growth mindset is really important when trying to Flip a Flop because you can accept the challenge and learn from it. - Alexander 5C
In well-being we have been learning about having a growth mindset. We did an activity called “Flip that Flop” where we told a mistake we made and how we could fix it. What really helped was having a GROWTH MINDSET and knowing that mistakes are learning opportunities we can grow from. - Sophia 5C
