Student News

Congratulations to Year 12 students Oliver Ferguson and Lucy Roberts who have been selected as our school nominations for the 2022 “Australian Olympic Change Maker” Award. The Australian Olympic Council’s award is based on the old Pierre de Coubertin award - the founder of the modern Olympic Games and takes place on an annual basis to recognise senior secondary students who demonstrate attributes consistent with Olympism through participation, leadership and driving change in their communities in sporting activities.

Anyone that knows Lucy through her sporting pursuits will agree that she thoroughly deserves this award as someone who has displayed great sportsmanship, passion, commitment, resilience, humility, knowledge and guidance to others over her time at the College whether it be representing the school in rowing, hockey, swimming, cross country or athletics. She has also coached and umpired over many years in some of these sports.

Olie epitomises the criteria by driving a cultural sporting change at the school thru his passion for volleyball. Since late last year he has trained up a group of his senior peers to learn and develop a love for and ability in volleyball. It has been great to see these students practice and play every Friday lunchtime and sometimes other times which culminated in some inter school games against Monivae College this term. Well done Olie!

Basketball

We are currently in the process of putting together teams, sourcing coaches and managers for the new basketball season commencing in Term 4. Current players should by now have already replied by submitting their form to Mr Alexander and new players intending on playing for College should also have returned the form and be arranging clearances where necessary. If you have not done this then please do so to Miss Brabham at the junior school or myself at senior school by this Monday 15 August at the absolute latest or you will not be placed in a team. Registration information, confirmed season dates and team lists will be sent out in the coming weeks. If any parent, student or community member can assist the program by coaching or managing, please get in touch with Simone or myself.

Volleyball Report

Every Friday lunchtime, students from the Hamilton College wander down to the Sports Centre to participate in a friendly game of volleyball. Affectionately known as “Volleyball Fridays”, these games have been held since the start of this year, and steadily grown in popularity. Word eventually got around to Monivae, where an ex-volleyball player from Horsham, Jas McIntyre, was eager to set up some teams. After emails between myself, Jas and both school’s sports coordinators, we arranged for a date and time. On Monday the 8 August, the first interschool volleyball games were held between College and Monivae.

The girls’ teams were up first, in a game of 3 sets, each set being first to 15 points. The first set, Monivae led convincingly the entire way, all the way up to the 14th point. 3 points down, and one mistake costing them the set, the Hamilton College girls pushed back, and closed the gap. Now it was 14 to 14, a two point lead needed to win the set. Our girls fought hard, and the score for the first set was 17-15, College’s way. The second set, after a few early battles, ended with a score of 12-15, in Monivae’s favour. For the third and final set, our girls won the game, 15 to 11.

The boys were up, and we closed out our game quickly, beating Monivae 15-12 in two sets. Both teams fought hard, and there were plenty of exciting spikes, saves and rallies by both teams, not to mention that there was plenty of cross-court banter between friends.

It was a great afternoon, and Monivae has said that they are eager for a rematch in the coming weeks.

I’d like to extend my gratitude to Leigh Alexander, Terry Molan, and Jas McIntyre for helping set our games up. Of course, many thanks to everyone who participated, including Kaeden Talay, who didn’t get the chance to play, but still helped referee both games.

If anyone is interested in playing against Monivae, don’t hesitate to reach out, or come down to the Sports Centre on Friday.

Olie Ferguson
