Magis report

This week has seen the introduction of the House Spelling Championship, the first Magis-run house event open to all students.  The venture was an outstanding success with big teams from most homerooms.  Years 11 and 12 for instance had  45 students, a terrific response.  Koolyangarra won the championship ahead of very strong Loreto and Ward teams, but all houses had some top-performing homerooms.  Winners in each year group were:

  • Ben Linsten and Jacob Rigg (Year 12)
  • Finlay O’Loughlin (Year 11)
  • Natalie Ong (Year 10)
  • Daniel Doran (Year 9)
  • Gemma Bailey (Year 8)
  • Jennifer Ong (Year 7)

Final places were:

  1.  Koolyangarra
  2.  Loreto
  3.  Ward
  4.  Campion
  5.  St Louis
  6.  Loyola

John XXIII will field ten teams in the WA Debating League in 2020, including  four from Year 7, three from Year 8, and one each from Years 10, 11 and 12.  Fixtures should be out in about a week, coaches and managers finalised along with training arrangements, and our Debating Handbook will then be available by 3 March.  Major changes for 2020 include new starting times with Novices at 5:15pm, Juniors at 6:15pm and Seniors at 7:15pm.   This year points of information are included in the junior competition format.

Teams are now being finalised for the prestigious Da Vinci Decathlon at UWA on Tuesday 7 April (Years 7/8) and Wednesday 8 April (Years 9-11) and the Creative Edge Challenge at Curtin University on Saturday morning, 28 March.  Teams and training times will be finalised by  Friday 28 February.

All Magis and Altiora students are asked to check their Magis group emails regularly, particularly for information regarding Magis competitions, but also for details of exciting events such as TED-X and Academy Conferences they will have the opportunity to attend.  This week’s memo is attached, and the Week 4 memo will be out on Monday. Full House spelling results will be available with next week’s newsletter.
