What’s happening in the PATCH?

Welcome back to a new school year. The patch continues to shine, giving us a whopping 22kg crop of zucchini. The children have been using all of our produce to create delicious tastings in kitchen classes. As zucchini keeps on giving, we are also about to start a new menu with the addition of our corn, beans and peppers.

We introduced the Year 2 students to the garden with tool safety and a wander through the patch discussing what is growing, seed collecting and how we care for our chickens. Year 2 students will have a group of year 4 students to buddy up with during class time this year.

The year 6 students will also have a garden class working on projects throughout the year, giving them an opportunity to leave their footprint at KPS. Our first class has started work on our citrus and herb bed located outside the kitchen. The students worked on clearing most of the bed and taking cuttings of rosemary to replant in the future. We discussed the importance of taking cuttings, how this can save us money and how easy some plants are to propagate. We worked out we will save $90 on plants by propagating the rosemary.

Grade 4’s joined us in the classroom last week during the storms. We demonstrated how to build a compost and the importance of using green and brown materials used to creat a healthy compost. During this time we had the opportunity to look at compost through a magnifying glass.

Such a rewarding class with so much enthusiasm and discussion.
