MSL Team

Multisensory Structued Language

Oh did we have a great end to the holidays!?

Eight very enthusiastic staff members ventured to Valkstone Primary School for a week during the summer holidays to become schooled in the curious ways that words work! Multisensory Structued Language (MSL) is an approach to equip students with literacy strategies in supporting reading, spelling and handwriting development.

From learning letter sounds, to spelling rules – we did it all! We even learnt how to FLOSS! (Mr Halpin is an expert – next time you see him, make sure you ask him how to floss!)

Please see the Habits of Mind awards for the following teachers who participated in the training:

  • Mrs Bogicevic for Questioning and Problem Solving in asking clarifying questions throughout the week.
  • Ms Kallinikos for Thinking Flexibly by not overloading her frontal lobe with unnecessary information.
  • Miss Chesters for Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations when orthographically mapping the word ‘eidetic’.
  • Ms Morgan for Thinking about Thinking in looking for ‘red flag’ words that don’t follow spelling rules.
  • Mr Woolfe for Persisting with his vowel sound hand actions - Keep up the good work Mr Woolfe!
  • Mr Halpin for Striving for Accuracy in curating a new font for Microsoft Word with his immaculate note taking.

The Kingswood MSL team are continuing their curiosity into the way words work, and we are super excited to be bringing our learning into the school this year!

Sincerely,

Newfound ‘word enthusiasts’ - Miss Smedley & Miss Hunt
