Careers & Pathways

Year 11 WRICA Careers Expo

Year 11 students again had the opportunity to visit the annual WRICA Careers Expo on Friday 18 May. The WRICA Careers Expo has all Victorian universities in attendance, as well as TAFEs, private colleges and even employers – all ready to speak with our students about their future and how to achieve their goals.

In the lead up to this event, students completed a Pathways activity in Pastoral Class – where they needed to continue planning their future pathways by exploring case studies, discussion of issues with their peers and then through exploring training options to get into different fields.

It was great to hear discussion on the way back from the Expo – all surrounding their future and what they needed to do to achieve their goals.

If any students missed out on the excursion, I strongly encourage them and their parents or guardians to complete a quick search for “Open Days 2018” and find out when universities and TAFEs have their doors open to explore campus. As always, you can use the MSJ Pathways website to find out more information: www.msjpathways.wordpress.com

Year 10 Work Experience

Year 10 students will be completing Work Experience starting Monday 25 June and running through to Friday 29 June. Students have been working on gaining a placement since September, 2017.

Please assist me with the preparations for Work Experience by checking with your child that they have completed the following tasks:

  • Application for Work Experience has been handed in.
  • Work Experience Arrangement Form (the blue contract) has been filled out and signed by the employer, student and parent/guardian.
  • This has been handed in and will be signed by the principal.
  • Safe@Work General Module is complete and uploaded to Canvas.
  • Safe@Work Industry Specific Module is complete and uploaded to Canvas.
  • Once all the above has been completed, the student is ready to begin Work Experience.

Over the next two weeks, students that have handed in a signed Work Experience Arrangement Form will receive a copy with a letter to give to their employer. It is very important that the student contacts the employer before the placement to ensure that they are still able to host them and to pass on the letter to the employer. This letter will include a copy of the Arrangement Form for the employer's records, as well as fact sheets and FAQs to assist in the hosting of a student. If the student supplied an email address of the employer, the fact sheet and FAQs will also be emailed to the employer.

The week before work experience, the student and parent/guardian will receive an email with a summary of details, including a Google Map of the location of the business to help them navigate their way there. This email also serves as a function to report any absences or issues that need to be addressed – please use this function to get in touch with me in regards to any problems or issues.

Year 12 Tertiary Visits – 15 June

On Friday 15 June, Year 12 students will have the opportunity to visit one or two university campuses – including the Australian Catholic University, RMIT University, Swinburne University, the University of Melbourne, Deakin University and Monash University. You will receive a Care Monkey notification in the coming days to give approval for your child to attend a specific excursion. You will receive a Care Monkey notification in the coming days to give approval for your child to attend a specific excursion.

Please note that students will need to make their own way to each venue – we have done this for many years and it serves as a great way for students to understand how to get to university and that many campuses actually require you to navigate several modes of public transport and time to get there!

Students are able to wear casual clothes and will have the opportunity to eat lunch on campus to get a feel for what it is like. Students will be dismissed from the last university they are visiting.

Please speak with your child in regards to planning for the day, including how they will get to the university and make their way back home. Encourage them to plan out any questions that they have so that they can ask the experts on each campus.

If you have any questions in regards to this, please let me know via email – jmcmillan@msj.vic.edu.au

Pathways Resources

As always, please be sure to visit the MSJ Pathways website – www.msjpathways.wordpress.com – this is where you will find all the latest information on university and TAFE, as well as courses, career exploration, early entry programs, scholarships and more. Students are also able to book appointments through this website to see the Learning Leader – Pathways to ask about pathways within high school and of course where to go after school.
