Year 10 History Excursion - Jewish Holocaust Centre
On Thursday May 2 2019, our Year 10 History students visited the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Elsternwick.
After many weeks of studying World War II, Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, visiting the centre gave the students a great opportunity to see artifacts, read personal stories and learn firsthand from the many descendants of survivors who work as volunteer tour guides.
After watching a documentary about the Holocaust and the treatment of the Jews by the Nazis in World War II, the students had a guided tour of the museum. Perhaps the greatest privilege for the students was having the opportunity to sit and listen to a survivor of the Holocaust, Mr Abram Goldberg. His story was nothing short of inspirational and the students were in awe. Mr Goldberg survived years of living in the ghettos in Poland under Nazi occupation, as well as a series of Concentration Camps before he was liberated on May 2 1945. He and his oldest sister were the only surviving members of his family and he told the students of the incredible loss he suffered, including both parents, two sisters and more than 50 members of his extended family. The numbers are so hard to fathom.
Mr Goldberg arrived in Australia with his wife in 1951 and his positivity and willingness to make the world a better place was just amazing to listen to and witness. He told the students that this was his promise to his mother, before she was led to her death in Auschwitz in 1944. At the age of 94, and despite all of his hardships throughout the war years, he told the students that “life is beautiful and the sun will always rise again tomorrow”. Our students are so incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to meet and listen to such a beautiful human being, as he assured the students he still has “so much work do to leave the world in a better place”.
To learn directly from a primary source is a rare and unique opportunity for any student in History. I hope our students never forget Mr Goldberg’s inspirational words and take something from his approach in life.

A huge congratulations to Caitlin Williams and Emily Brennan who swam in maximum events and led the squad with pride as Co-Captains. Caitlin and Emily had a great day in the pool, placing in the top 2 in their events and were awarded the U21 Girls Pennant. A reminder that the two girls won the U17 pennant in 2018 as well. Such a massive achievement by these girls in the pool and they should be extremely proud of themselves; we definitely are!
A huge thank you to all the staff who volunteered to help out at the carnival and also during the morning training sessions. Thank you to the staff below, without your hard work and efficiency, the carnival would not have been a success:
VCE Top Design Excursion
The VCE Season of Excellence 2019 - Top Design exhibition was visited by our current Year 11 and 12 Product Design and Technology (Textiles) students. This was a great experience to see top technology students from across Victoria showcase their designs and folios. It gave the girls inspiration and drive to have their own folios and designs up to a high standard.
We attended the forum prior to viewing the exhibition and listened to a current fashion designer talk about working in the Fashion Industry including her insights. Her inspiration for her designs came from her African heritage.
We walked to Brunswick St to The Fabric Store and the girls were able to look at the fabrics there, collect samples necessary for their folios and garments. It was a great day out.

Year 12 Business Management Excursion
As part of their Year 12 assessment, 50 students attended a tour of the Yakult Factory in Dandenong South.
Students observed the inner factory floor, discovering for the first time, how the infamous drink was made. Many students were surprised at how clean the factory was and with the modern equipment and machinery used in the production process.
Towards the end of the tour all students were treated to sample the drink. Many students had not tried the drink and were left with mixed feelings.

Mini Vinnies - Winter Appeal
On Thursday 6 June Nazareth College will be celebrating their annual Social Justice Mass. In preparation for this Mass, the Mini Vinnies Conference Group is urging the Nazareth Community to embrace the collection of various items listed below. As with all of our appeals, the Mini Vinnies cannot donate alone, and require everyone to contribute to these donations in order to help those that are currently living in poverty.
The following items can be collected by all Houses:
- Non-perishable food items (that are within the use-by-date)
- Toiletries
- Clothing
A point tally sheet will be maintained by a Mini Vinnie’s Volunteer who will come around to Pastoral groups every morning to collect items.
Each item equates to one point for your House (except for used clothing)
The Mini Vinnies will have a box in each Head Of House Office to store donations and all clothing bins shall be located in the C Block. Donated items will contribute to House Points.
Did you know that;
On any given night in Australia, 1 in 200 people are homeless.
Furthermore, 10% of homeless Australians are between 12-18 years of age.
Please donate generously by supporting our Winter Appeal.
Thank you.
