Year 9 Business Expo

As a part of their study of both Economics and Business in Term One, our Year 9 students participate in the Business Expo each year. This event is unique to our Year 9 level- and is one of the highlights of their academic year.

This year, the students truly excelled. After many weeks of hard work, great guidance by their Humanities teachers and excellent team work- the students put their businesses on display on the night of the Expo- on Thursday March 28 2019.

Visitors, including past students, parents, siblings and staff were greeted to businesses of all types- and all were thoroughly impressed with what they saw. The students greeted the visitors with incredible confidence, and they explained their motivations behind their respective businesses with ease.

When creating their business, the students had to consider many factors- marketability, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and originality to mention just a few.

I would like to thank the Year 9 Humanities teachers for their great guidance for the students in the weeks leading up to the Expo- Mr Chan, Ms Riverans, Mr McAleer and Ms Smith-, the Resource Centre staff for their dedicated assistance to the students with a lot of their marketing material, Ms Douglass for being our guest judge for the evening, Ms Mackay for the beautiful photos of our incredible students, Mr Broadbent for the assistance with the live voting and for being the emcee for the evening, to all staff who attended to see the Year 9’s in action- and a special thanks to all parents, relatives and supporters of our Year 9 students who attended the Expo. It was a very successful and enjoyable night for the students.

I congratulate the following students on their awards:

  • Overall Winner- Team ELYSIAN- Chloe Boric, Renee Di Maio, Sarah Bosquet, Shania Assauw.
  • Judge’s Award- Team  MULTI ABILITY PEN eUNLIMITED- Samuel Holden, Elizabeth Kalaitzis, Illiana Nicolaou, Kitty Tuerhong

This year the Business Expo for Year 9s was held on 28 March. The Business Expo was an opportunity for the Year 9 students to create their own business and show off their creativity.  There was a wide range of different ideas and creations on the night and it was truly amazing to see everyone’s achievements.  On the night of the event it was wonderful to see how many people turned up. From parents to teachers and friends, to brothers and sisters.  We thank all the people who took their time to come support the Year 9 students.

All businesses were amazing, but there could only be one winner. The group that won overall was Elysian Events! Elysian was an event planning business that planned birthday parties, baby showers, gender reveals, engagement parties and more. Their main goal for their business was to focus on the quality of the event and not the cheque.  We would like to thank all the Year 9 students for their hard work on the Business Expo and for everyone that turned up on the night. Thank you to our teachers for their support too!

The Year 9 student body were first introduced to what a business is and the different forms of business there are at the start of the year. We were then asked to research different companies; who founded them, what they do, what they represent and how they impact the world. It was then time for us to dive a little deeper into the world of business and come up with our own concepts and ideas!

This year my group and I decided to do something a little different. Instead of creating a product of sorts we agreed on a dog shelter, Dog and Human Rehabilitation (DHR), to be specific. Half of us wanted to do something regarding animals while the other half was interested in things to do with mental health. Honestly we don't even know how we came up with a dog shelter though as it is a bit of a leap from pet accessories and a meditation app. DHR is a shelter where we focus on mental health not only for humans but also for dogs. Our target audience is people who have mental illness, disabilities or simply need a companion or protector. When a dog is given to us we simply take care of them and make sure that they are okay mentally and physically to take on a human that needs them most! If they aren't ready at the moment then we would put them through foster care until they feel comfortable enough to aid a human. If they are unable to reach that level we need them to be then we put them up for adoption to a family that will take care of them and suit all of their needs. When putting them up for adoption with someone who needs them we make sure that not only the people will take care of the dog but the dog will aid them with what they need most.

Now that we had our business it was time to introduce it to the world at our 2019 Business Expo. As soon as the doors opened every business and student was met with questions by interested parents, teachers and past students. Many of the current Year 9 students were impressed by the range and quality of the many business ideas our fellow peers had come up with; a candy shop, sporting lessons, skin care and beauty products, energy drinks and smoothies, disability inclusive products, pet insurance, event photography, event planning, technical support and gaming to name a few. Each student answered with confidence and a sense of accomplishment that we created this by ourselves - of course the teachers helped a lot with setting everything up and making sure we were on track! The Expo was a huge eye opener and I cannot wait to see what the next Year 9s come up with!
