Updated GEC Assessment and Reporting Policy

Throughout this year, the Glen Eira College Teaching and Learning team, in consultation with staff, parents and students have reviewed the Assessment and Reporting Policy. Changes will come into effect at the beginning of next year. Changes include a:

  • Clear statement of what is expected for satisfactory completion.
  • Report category for lateness so parents can see if there child has submitted work late.
  • Performance key so parents can translate the percentage into a grade.
  • Expectation that all students will have their work returned to them or a copy given at all year levels. This will provide greater opportunity for students to respond to feedback and discuss opportunities for learning growth with their families.

If you have any queries in relation to the policy and its impact, please contact Teaching and Learning Leaders Clinton Chiumello or Bernie Coghlan at the school.

Purpose of Assessment

To determine the performance level of knowledge, skills and concepts learnt throughout the semester.

Purpose of Reporting

To communicate to parents and students learning progress towards standards, Assessment Task and Unit results.

Year 7-10 Policy

Year 7-10 Policy for Satisfactory Completion

For satisfactory completion (S), at the end of a semester, students must complete allocated homework, classwork and assessment tasks as documented.

Year 7-10 Assessment Task and Examination Performance Key

The key below shows the performance descriptor and the relevant percentage range for the Grade. At Year 7-10 a Grade is used for reporting on each Assessment Task.

Examinations

It is expected all 9 SEAL, Year 10-12 students undertake examinations in semester one and two. Students who do not sit examinations are required to provide suitable reasons for absence e.g. Medical Certificate. The examination result is not an indication of requirements for an S/N however, it is used for course counselling.

Victorian Certificate of Education Policy

VCE Policy for Satisfactory Completion

For satisfactory completion (S) students must demonstrate achievement of each of the learning outcomes for the unit in accordance with the specifications set out in the Study Design. This decision is based on the teacher's judgement of student performance on a combination of set work and assessment tasks related to the outcomes.

Achievement of a learning outcome means:

  • the work meets the required standard as described in the outcomes.
  • the set work is submitted and assessment tasks are completed.
  • the teacher is able authenticate that the work upon which the judgement is the student’s own work.
  • there have been no substantive breaches of rules (including attendance requirements)

NB. Students who do not meet the 95% minimum attendance requirement will risk receiving an N for that unit, even if all work is completed satisfactorily. Documentation must be provided such as a medical certificate.

VCE Assessment Task and Examination Performance Key

The key below determines the performance descriptor for percentage that is awarded for each Assessment Task. A whole number percentage is used when reporting. VCE requires students to submit work by set deadlines; if a deadline is missed a zero score is to be awarded.

Please note, the scores obtained for School Assessed Coursework (SACs) and School Assessed Tasks (SATs) may change as a result of VCAA statistical moderation.

Progress Reports

Teachers use the Progress Report rubric to make judgements on learning progress for each student they teach. Progress Reports are completed on a 6 week cycle in Years 7-11 and a 3 week cycle in Year 12 in each semester.

The descriptors in the table below relate to the Glen Eira 5 (5 things you will see from our students), Behaviour For Learning (Do your best, Allow others to do their best, Always act respectfully) and Classroom Expectations (Classroom management sequence) documents.
