Celebrating the growth in our wonderful children on each learning level...
The Prep students have been busy developing their passion for reading. Last week, Level 5 was buzzing with excitement as we explored a range of books throughout Book Week. This has continued into our English lessons where we have been discovering different stories about Kings and Queens. We are extremely proud of our Prep students and the tremendous growth in their reading ability. Well done Preps we are so proud of the readers and learners you are becoming!
This week in Year 1 we have begun our exploration of Ancient Egypt! We have been discovering the importance of communication and how keeping accurate records ensure history could be shared from generation to generation. Our students had a go at writing their name in hieroglyphs! They did such a wonderful job at this task!
Our Year 2 students thoroughly enjoyed developing their skills in woodwork during our 'A Bright Idea' in-visit. The goal of the experience was to build a plane model with working lights as a celebration of our Science Unit: Flash! Bang! There was a chorus of banging hammers, sanding of wood and voices of helpful students, as they progressed through each of the stages. They were very proud of their end products, as they flew them out of the room! We wonder if there will be any keen woodworkers in the future who will create some innovative designs.
It has been a busy couple of weeks in Year 3. Last week, we celebrated Book Week as a school. Students had a great time buddy reading with the Year 1's, visiting the Book Fair to create a wish list and attending the Book Week Parade where they dressed up as a character from one of their favourite books. On Monday, the Year 3’s went to MSAC for the Basketball Gala Day. Students were put into mixed teams of Year 3 and 4 and played multiple games of basketball against other schools. Miss Shannon, Miss Ciona and Miss Megan were very proud of the sportspersonship and resilience shown by all athletes.
On Wednesday, the cohort visited Legoland as part of English unit. Students attended a creative story making workshop where they made a narrative story using Lego. Students enjoyed spending the rest of the day on the rides, in the 4D Cinema and building and testing their own Lego cars!
Year 4 students had lots of fun at the Basketball Gala Day on Monday at MSAC! Students got to practice the basketball skills they have been learning in PE lessons. Students demonstrated great perseverance and sportspersonship during the day.
In Science, Year 4 have been learning about the properties of materials. To demonstrate their knowledge, they worked in pairs or groups to create device which would protect the egg from cracking when dropped from 3 metres high. This week we tested our devices and then evaluated how successful they were and why.
In Week 7, Year 5 students took part in the Basketball Gala Day at MSAC. The day was filled with high-flying action and sportsmanship. Students were able put skills they have been learning in Physical Education into play. We saw great teamwork, resilience, and enthusiasm. The support from the SMPS Community was a driving force behind each team, encouraging their teammates from the sideline. The Year 5 teachers were so impressed that all students got involved and tried their very best on the day.
Over the past two weeks, the Year 6 students have been immersed in the world of Mathematics, specifically focusing on the concepts of volume and capacity. Through hands-on activities and interactive lessons, they've delved into understanding the relationships between these measurements and their practical applications in real life. From measuring the volume of various objects to exploring the capacity of containers, the students have been engaged in a dynamic learning experience that encourage them to think critically and problem-solve.
During English, the students embarked on a literary journey with the novel "Blueback." This captivating book has not only sparked their imaginations but also led to insightful discussions about its protagonist, Abel. Through character studies, the students have managed to draw parallels between the fictional characters and their own lives, fostering a deeper connection with the story. The exploration didn't stop with the book itself—they actively researched and compiled information about the author, Tim Winton, creating an informative text that showcased their analytical and research skills. The past two weeks have truly been an enriching and educational period, and the students' enthusiastic mindset has undoubtedly fueled their excitement for acquiring new knowledge and skills. Well done Year 6!
