Supporting students to stay happy, safe and connected...

RUOK Day

In Week 10, we celebrate RUOK Day!

R U OK? is a public health promotion charity that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives. Find more information here.

On Tuesday 12th September SMPS will celebrate RUOK Day. Note that this is slightly earlier than the national RUOK Day, which is on Thursday 14th September. We have brought ours forward to include the Grade 3 and 4 students, who will be on camp later that week.

RUOK Day at SMPS will involve a day of teaching lessons connected with the RUOK initiative. The lessons focus on:

  • Being a good friend
  • How to ask 'Are you okay?'
  • How to support yourself and your friends by
    • supporting others
    • asking for help
    • considering what you can and can't control
  • This includes a fun lesson, chosen by students, to boost their happiness and wellbeing. Examples of this might be dancing, painting, cooking or taking part in a treasure hunt around school!

Students will still wear their usual school uniform on that day.

The timings of the school day will remain the same.

Parents are not required to do anything in preparation - this is for your information only.

Students are not required to bring any resources into school on that day.

There are some fantastic community resources here, which you could use in your community including with older children and adults.

Note that we will only be using age-appropriate language such as 'how to recognise if someone is not feeling okay or struggling', 'how to be a good friend and a great listener'. We will not be delving deeper into topics linked with mental health support.

Reach out to your child's class teacher if you have any questions.
