New subject – Year 9 Food Lab
This year ESC is trialling a new Technology based subject called ‘Food Lab’ with all Year 9 students, run in partnership with Whittlesea Technical School.
The project was initiated by Assistant Principal Joshua Wolter as an exciting opportunity to improve students' inquiry-based skills. The students spend 2 full days at the Technical College creating a food product that helps solve a world problem.
Prior to this, they understand all aspects of the problem and come up with a food-based solution that they can create, package and market! This year the problem to solve is based around this concept: ‘reducing meat consumption is beneficial for the health of people and the planet’.
At Whittlesea’s industrial kitchen, students created a variety of plant-based dishes including shepherd’s pie, vegetable parcels and burgers.
Not only are they learning how to problem solve and cook a great plant-based meal, they are learning about kitchen safety protocols, entrepreneurship and working in a team.
