Exploring Early Childhood

Students in the exploring early childhood class have been studying child growth and development.

With a current focus on physical development, students researched activities that develop fine and gross motor skills in children. As part of this area of study students made playdough. The use of playdough allowed students to relate the theory learnt about fine motor, coordination and creativity first hand.

Textiles and Design

The Stage 6 textiles and design class have developed their inspiration and design ideas for the under the sea textiles art piece. This supporting documentation is a replica of the HSC folio and will provide students to with the skills required to produce their major projects. The class will be bringing the design ideas to life in the next weeks.

Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS)

Year 9/10 PASS students have been working on physical fitness this term. Students have been completing fitness tests to evaluate their flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, speed, balance, power, coordination and reaction times. In practical lessons, students utilised various new types of equipment to measure their level of fitness against the national averages of the health and skill related components of fitness. In theory lessons, they have been linking the components of fitness to various sporting pursuits and creating training programs using the frequency, intensity, time, and type (FITT) principle.

Students have just submitted their first assessment task which required them to analyse their fitness testing results and plan a training program for someone in their chosen sport. A great start to the year.

Science

Stage 4 science students have been learning about the digestive, respiratory and cardiovascular body systems. They conducted a dissection on a pluck, which included all these systems, a heart, lungs, and a liver.  Students were able to see the structures in the heart and lungs that they have been learning about in class.

Many students found the size and mass of the liver to be a lot larger than they thought, while the heart was much smaller.  The students found it very interesting how large the lungs will inflate and the change in colour that occurs when they are filled with air.  They then had to label all the structures they had been learning about in class.
