This Sunday, April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day. This is a day sanctioned by the United Nations.

In Australia about 370,000 people have Autism and each person has different strengths, interests, challenges and aspirations. The most important message is that no two Autistic people are the same and that autism may not be what you think it is. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach and there is so much misunderstanding out in the public. Fitting in can be exhausting for people with Autism. The environment and people’s attitudes can often be more of a barrier for people on the autism spectrum. Strengths and interests are what motivate Autistic people to do well in life and if others can support this, everyone flourishes.

The community needs to not only be aware of autism; but move to a place of inclusivity, acceptance and understanding.
