Learning Centre News...

Learning Centre One

Welcome back to Term 3 everyone! The preps have come back super excited to see their friends and teachers after a break! We all hope that you had a great break together over the holidays.

Throughout Phonics the students have been exploring the sounds  OA, OO, OO and AR. In reading the students have been exploring a range of fiction texts about animals. They have been looking at a variety of words such as verbs, and how adjectives are words used to describe the various parts of an animal. Students then focused on writing about their animals by including labels and how they can use their labels to create a simple sentence and how they can edit their writing to then produce a good copy.

In Maths it has been an exciting  time of learning for the students as they have been exploring the different ways that they can make quantities, name numbers and the place value of numbers. They have created think boards, used various hands on materials and have explored the idea of numbers that come before and after. The students then looked at the concept of bundling and how to make 10.

The students in Religion have been learning about The story of the Good Samaritan. Throughout their exploration the students have engaged in Godly play, reflected on the qualities of a Good samaritan and explored what it means to be compassionate and what compassion is. They then looked at the story of the Prodigal Son and explored what forgiveness is and how we can ask for forgiveness from others.

Learning Centre Two

Welcome back to OLSC for Term 3! We have so much going on in LC2 this term and we are very excited about participating in many special events. Just last week, some of the students travelled by bus to compete in both the Soccer and Netball District Championships. Scott and Cheryl accompanied our soccer players and were both very impressed by the skill and determination shown by our students.

Lisa and Danielle travelled to Altona with our netballers and they said it was wonderful to see how respectful and full of encouragement for each other they were.

LITERACY

Our Literacy lessons have been focussing on the art of persuasion that we see and hear when looking at print and media advertisements. The 5/6 students have been busy designing their own ads for pre-existing chocolates and they have worked hard to develop eye-catching artwork and catchy slogans.

Our Maths lessons have been focussing on working with fractions. the 5/6 students have been representing many wonderful fractions by shading pictures, by folding stripes of paper evenly and on number lines. They have also been investigating how we can multiply and divide the numerator and denominator of a fraction to find equivalent fractions.

In literacy, we have been exploring information text features and facts. We have learned about facts and opinions and used text-specific words in our writing.

In maths, we have looked at numbers up to 100 and begun to explore 2D shapes. We explored the school to identify all the shapes in our environment.

In inquiry, we have been learning about living and non-living things. We explored plants and are now moving on to animals and what they need to survive.

In religion, we are learning how to be Stewards in our community. We will be going on a walk next Monday to explore our local environment and discuss ways we can Stewards in the community. We had an incursion with Charlotte from the Werribee River Association.

Learning Centre Four

Dance Curriculum

Last week we participated in the Dance Curriculum incursion and learnt some steps to a song. It was wonderful to see lots of smiles on our faces as we learnt our steps. It was impressive to see quickly our 3/4 students were able to pick up steps. We then got to perform our dance to the rest of the school and parents int he afternoon.

Mushrooms

As part of our inquiry unit, we were lucky to receive some free mushroom growing kits. The kits came with soil and the mushroom spores. Once the spores had developed enough, we added the extra soil and are now lightly watering them. Eventually, we hope to see lots of yummy mushrooms growing.
