Term 3, Week 2 - Friday 21st July, 2023

Good afternoon OLSC families

Term three is well and truly upon us!  It has been a very busy start to the term following what I hope was a great winter break for you all.  Term three is shaping up to be a very busy one that includes Sacramental celebrations of First Eucharist and Confirmation and the 5/6 students will attending camp.

School Closure Day

On Monday 14th August we will have a school closure day.  The staff will be apart of professional learning with a focus on effective learning and teaching in both Mathematics and Literacy.  The day will be facilitated by staff from Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) curriculum teams.

Staff Announcement

Rita Azzopardi

In the couple of weeks Rita will be taking family leave as she and Tom prepare for the birth of their second child.  Frankie is expected to become a big sister in the nest few months.

Welcome Jacqueline Flood

Jacqueline Flood will be joining our staff team this term to take over from Rita in the performing arts role.  Jacqueline has vast experience in teaching performing arts and is looking forward to working with the OLSC community.

Make Every Minute Count

Invariably Term 3 is a term of high absences due to colds and illness.  Please be vigilant in monitoring your children's health and if needed keep them at home.

On some occasions students have absent for non essential or health reasons.  It is important to make every minute count.  There are many students that arrive late almost every day!

Students learn new things at school everyday and unnecessarily missing or being late to school puts them behind.  Each absence puts students behind and detrimentally affects their educational outcomes.

By being half an hour late for school is equal to missing one day per fortnight.  Being away from school for one day per fortnight equals missing one and a half years over 13 years of schooling.

Book Week and Book Fair

Term 3 is an exciting time for our book lovers out there - it's Book Week and Book Fair time! This year, Book Week runs from the 19th to the 25th of August and the OLSC Book Week Parade will be held on the morning of Friday 25th of August. Students are invited to come to school dressed as something book related OR they can choose to wear any brightly coloured party clothes as we celebrate our love of reading.

The Scholastic Book Fair also arrives at school during the same week and will be open each day before and after school. This is always a hugely successful event and is a great opportunity to purchase a variety of books for gifts. More information on both of these events is to come.

Student Safety - Please Read

This morning, students from a neighbouring primary school reported that, while walking to school, a car followed them and offered to drive them to school.  The student refused and arrived at school safely.  I recommend this as an opportunity to discuss safety with your child / children.  Please remind your children to not get into cars with strangers and ask for help if feeling uneasy or unsafe.

Upgraded School Drop Off / Pick Up Zone

You may have noticed that we have upgraded the 'drop off and pick up' zone at the front of the school.  This has given a lot of much needed extra space for the busy after school pick up time.  Extra chairs have been added.

Some parents have asked whether a shade structure will be added to this area.  Although this would be great, unfortunately the cost of this is not viable for an area that, although is busy, is only so for 10 minutes at the end of the school day.

Is Your Child in Year 5? - please read!

If your child is in Year 5 and you plan for them to attend MacKillop in Year 7 in 2025 it is time to start the enrolment process with the college.

Enrolment applications for Year 7, 2025 close on Friday August 18th.

Have a great weekend, stay safe and thank you all once again for the great success of the OLSC Colour Run.

Thanks to all in the community for a great start back for Term 3.
