Meet Our Newest SCSC Member

~ Godzilla the Blue-Tongue Lizard

RESPECT: "Recently, we have got a new school pet.  The Year 7 students are calling it 'Godzilla'!  Godzilla is a blue-tongue lizard, the largest member of the skink family. Unlike other reptiles, blue-tongues do not lay eggs, they give birth to live babies. Blue-tongue lizards are native to Australia and can also be found in New Guinea, and Indonesia.

Blue-tongues like to eat slugs and snails and our blue-tongue lizard is currently being fed wet cat food, scrambled eggs and mashed banana. They eat every second day or so. Blue-tongues have strong jaws so they can crush prey such as beetles and snail shells.

We are not sure of Godzilla’s exact age or gender, but we think they are around 6 months old and will grow a lot bigger. Blue-tongues can live for up to 30 years in the wild.  You can currently find Godzilla in Year 7 Learning Common West. They are in a large enclosure that was made in Woodtech by a former SCSC student. There are two lamps in the enclosure, one is a ceramic heating globe that stays on all the time so the lizard can stay warm. The other is a UV globe which mimics the sun and provides both light and Ultraviolet radiation (UV) which blue-tongue lizards need to be healthy.

There are instructions on the wall next to the enclosure about how to interact with blue-tongue lizards.  Be sure to be kind, careful, and gentle when interacting with Godzilla."

Year 10 'Getting Ready For Work'

STRIVE:  The Year 10 ‘Getting Ready For Work’ elective has kicked off the semester with enthusiasm. The aim of the subject is to engage the students with a diverse range of careers and workers in the community to help them understand the requirements of different careers and pathways. Each week, we go on a walking excursion to a business in the Industrial Estate in Torquay. So far, we have visited Bones MMA Gym and Maple Bakery.  We have an ever-growing list of businesses to visit!

The requirement of going is that a student from the class must call the business, introduce themselves, the subject, and ask politely if we can visit and ask the owner or managers some questions about their workplace. This is a nerve-wracking experience for the Year 10s but each week we have had a student volunteer to do this. Hands shaking and with a prepared script in front of them, they have made the call and organised for our class to visit.  It’s a gutsy effort from these students.

Pictured is Connor Sneddon, Year 10, with our enthusiastic education support staff member Katrina Simpson, calling Bunnings to organise next week’s excursion.

Each student in the class has demonstrated maturity, responsibility, and respect in these excursions and should be commended for how they have behaved – a real testament to the guts and maturity of our Year 10 cohort.

Well done team!

Kate Griffin – classroom teacher.

There’s no point and shoot happening here, as all students applied their knowledge of aperture, ISO and shutter speed to capture a range of intended visual effects and aesthetics.  This is just one of the activities the Year 11’s have participated in this Term whilst exploring their current unit of work ‘Art for Social Change’.

Kyana Jennings & Lilly Pieroni

This photography task is inspired by contemporary artist Yang Yongliang, whose work questions the impact of urbanisation upon pristine landscapes and was viewed by the students whilst on an excursion in Term 1 to the NGV.  Students will engage with manual and digital editing techniques back in the classroom to create layered images of both natural and manmade environments.

Vocational Major Garden Harvest & Community Project

FLOURISH:  Our amazing Voc. Major students have been helping out in the garden and had the joy of harvesting some great nutritional goodies; kale, cabbage, carrots and lettuce.

Also, our students have been potting succulents and getting their creative on, painting pots for their upcoming community school project with VET music students in preparation for their upcoming festival.

These fabulous pots will be sold on the plant stall.  Our students have also been learning about managing money with the Barefoot Investor.

State Cross Country

STRIVE:  Congratulations to the five students, Tilly Moreton, Finlay Miller, Lilli Watson, Ada Beasley and Sienna O’Neill (plus Sienna McCumber who was unable to attend) who all represented SCSC at the State Cross Country Championships on the 13th of July.

All students represented the school well on a tough/boggy horse racing track in the Yarra Valley. These students all finished in the top 10 in their respective races at the previous Western Metro Region event to progress to the State level, meaning that they are within the top 100 students of their age group in the State for cross country.

Keep up the great work!

Senior Netball

UNITE: "On Thursday 20th of July the senior boys and girls netball teams arrived at the Geelong Sports Hub ready to give it their all. The day began with a briefing from the coordinator of the event. Up first, the boys, taking on Belmont. After an intense first half, the boys were up at halftime. Miss Stonehouse, the mastermind behind the talented group of people, rallied the boys to stay vigilant as the game was not won yet. The second half came around, the scores were close, but after a brilliant performance, the boys prevailed, securing the win. Despite their limited netball experience, they were able to overcome their first obstacle of the day thanks to their chemistry as a team and the amazing coaching from Miss Stonehouse.

While the boys rested and prepared for their next challenge, the girls took centre stage, taking on the almighty Grovedale. An excellent and perfectly executed first half left the girls up 7-2 at halftime. However, the game was far from over. As the second half began, heartbreak struck. Grovedale stepped up their game, scoring over and over again, placing them in the lead. Although the girls battled bravely, it was not enough. A devastating loss.

Once more the boys were ready to take on Grovedale. After what they did to the girls, the boys were hungry for revenge. However, the competition was fierce. It was almost as if they had been training for this day for years. The game was blown away from the start, and Surf Coast had no chance of a comeback.

The girl's next challenge awaited. South Geelong. After half time, the game was close. Victory was insight. That was when tragedy struck. A devastating injury left the girls distraught. But they never gave up. Unfortunately, they were unable to secure the win.

The boys final game arrived. They went out firing. But whenever they scored, so did the opposition. Although they tried, they didn’t make it. The boys finished their series with one win and two losses.

The final game for the girls, and the final game for Surf Coast came around. The last chance to make a stand. The boys all gathered round, supporting the girls as they began. Both teams were yet to win a game, leaving them hungry for the taste of victory. They put their all into the first half, securing a small lead. They moved the ball well, they shot well. Halftime break was intense. Miss Stonehouse gave a speech, motivating the girls to keep going. And they did. But the opposition was equally as hungry. The scores were tied with two minutes remaining. The opposition scored. The girls then scored. The game went back and forth, but no team was able to get the upper hand. The siren sounded. It was a draw.

Overall, both teams represented the school community positively displaying true sportsmanship and respect. Special thank you to Jaz who came and supported the day."

Introducing Our New Nurse ~ Jenna Hoogeveen

We are very excited to have a new addition to our wonderful SCSC staff team, Jenna Hoogenveen.  Jenna comes with a wealth of experience, as well as her bright  & happy disposition.  Welcome Jenna!

"My new role as the School Nurse and First Aid Officer involves providing primary healthcare for staff and students at Surf Coast Secondary Collage.  Ranging from running sick bay, coordinating student medical needs as well as being another friendly face in the Administration Office!

Prior to this role, I worked as a Paediatric Nurse at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne for nearly 4 years, primarily working with kids requiring Cardiac and Renal care.  I also spent time working with neonates, as well as a wide range of kids with general hospital admissions.

I'm most looking forward to being part of the community!  I am looking forward to the continuity of care and support I can offer for the staff and students.  Also, helping parents feel confident that there is a Registered Nurse at the school who can confidently attend to medical needs.  It will be great to help students to feel well so they can learn well."
