The feast day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop

Last Tuesday - 8th August - was the feast day of St Mary MacKillop - Australia’s first saint. A beautiful Liturgy for K-6 was led by the Year 5 students. During the Liturgy we were reminded of how she dedicated her life to education and to caring for the poor and disadvantaged, particularly in rural and remote areas of Australia.

                                            Did you know ?

  • Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne on 15th January 1842.  Her parents, Alexander and Flora, had both emigrated to Australia from Scotland.
  • Mary MacKillop found an old building to make the first school. Her brother John helped her.
  • In March 1866, Mary rang the bell for the first time and soon 33 outback kids were getting their first free education.

Some beautiful and wise sayings of St Mary MacKillop …..

“Never see a need without doing something about it.”

Tuesday 15th August: The feast of the Assumption:

Next Tuesday students from Years 3-6 will be attending the 9.15am Parish Mass for the Feast of the Assumption. On this day we remember and celebrate Mary being ‘assumed’ into Heaven, body and soul. It is a ‘solemnity’ which means that it is a very special and important feast day that is celebrated in the Catholic faith.

World Youth Day

WYD is drawing to a close and with an estimated 310,000 people it was certainly a very special time for all involved. The event was officially opened on August 1 with an open-air Mass celebrated by Manuel Clemente in Eduardo VII Park in Lisbon, Portugal. WYD takes place every 2 -3 years and is widely attended by pilgrims throughout the world. This year Ms Kennedy - one of our Year 3 Teachers attended WYD and we look forward to the experiences and wisdom she will be able to share with us on her return.
