Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

YEAR 5 DEBATING

Last Friday Michelle Rea and the Year 5 debating team attended their debating for the Eisteddfod at the Mozart Hall. They had been practising solidly over the past few weeks and due to this all classes won their debates against some hot competition.

Michelle was very proud of all students but there was special mention from the adjudicator to Seth Berugodaarachchi and Calvin Traill. Well done to the Year 5 debating team.

YEAR 5 SOVEREIGN HILL CAMP- 2ND to 4TH AUGUST 2023

This week the Year 5 students excitedly packed their camping gear onto the bus ready for a fantastic three days away.

Day One

After a relaxing coach ride to Ballarat, everyone enjoyed the educational experience of The Eureka Centre. Students completed three interesting sessions at the museum. Their prior knowledge was extended as they learned about and answered questions relating to the history of gold mining in the Ballarat area and the Eureka Rebellion.

Their excitement levels were high as we reached Sovereign Hill. After a play on the playground and afternoon tea of muffins, groups participated in tours and activities as well as having some free time in small groups. Teachers were excited to hear a few cries of “Eureka!” as some discovered specks of gold dust!

Our dinner of butter chicken and rice was a hit. This was followed by the highlight of the day - the Sound and Light Show! This was a 90 minute extravaganza, made up of amazing cinematography including 3D effects.

Day Two

Another action packed, educational and enjoyable day. The sun shone again, all day long, making it even more pleasant for everybody.

Students enjoyed breakfast in the cafe, followed by sessions including boiled lolly making, life on the goldfields, two wonderful underground mine tours and plenty of time to explore all of the attractions.

After a delicious dinner, we headed to the magnificent replica theatre for a hilarious pantomime, which had us all in stitches! Students also enjoyed the question time afterwards.

The Sovereign Hill staff have been fantastic. Each session has offered plenty of time for questions, and our students have had the opportunity to really imagine what life on the goldfields was like for all involved. The food and accommodation have also been excellent.

Day three will involve a candle making demonstration and more time exploring, before packing up and heading home.

This camp couldn’t have gone ahead without our Parent volunteers. Thank you very much to Frith, Greg and Clinton, your time and assistance is much appreciated.

Also these camps take a lot of organising and it goes without mention that the staff involved have done yet another amazing effort in providing an enjoyable experience for all our Year 5 students. Thank you Gina Mills, Lidia Allen, Trent Hill, Michelle Rea, Stephanie Hann, Danielle Toone, Brian and Louise.

Expected arrival time approximately 3.30pm. Please let teachers know when you've collected your child.

COTTAGE BY THE SEA CAMP- 7TH to 11TH AUGUST 2023

The students selected for this camp are also preparing for a wonderful week by the sea at Queenscliffe. We are indebted to the Cottage by the Sea organisation and the community for allowing us to attend two years in succession. Thank you also to Patrick Kluver and Lily Maglaras who will be accompanying the 18 students next week.

NATIONAL ABORIGINAL AND ISLANDER DAY CELEBRATIONS - FRIDAY 4TH AUGUST

It’s my pleasure to attend this celebration day at the Gunditjmara Reserve in Harris Street with Jess White and the Koorie students from Year 1. Fun activities, face painting, yarning and special acknowledgements will be followed by a barbecue lunch. We have a strong and deep connection with the Peek Whurrong people of the Eastern Marr nation and Gunditjmara at Warrnambool Primary School.

YEAR 6 MELBOURNE CAMP - 23RD to 25TH AUGUST

Our Year 6 students are getting very excited about their upcoming camp at the end of the month. They are heading to Melbourne for the first time in many years and it is also the first in a long time that the Year 6 students have a camp to themselves.

Teachers Jasmine Cunningham, Thom Fraser and Jane McLauchlan have spent much time organising this wonderful camp which will rely on public transport for much of the time. This gives the students a wonderful opportunity to experience Melbourne and city life.

Some of the great activities include the MCG, Lygon Street, the Museum, Shrine of Remembrance and Parliament house among other things. The base camp is City CYC on the corner of Collins and King Street.

100 DAYS OF FOUNDATION

Our not so little Foundation students celebrated 100 days of school on Thursday. Students came dressed as their 100 year old self and participated in a number of activities themed around "100".

This day is a big milestone for our Foundation students and we are extremely proud and congratulate all our Foundation students on a wonderful start to their schooling years.

A big thank you also to our Foundation teachers April-Lee Sandri, Julie Giblin and Jacqui Matters.

FOUNDATION MYSTERY BUS TOUR

On Wednesday our Foundation students went on a mystery bus trip around Warrnambool to see some of the significant places in our community.

The bus departed from the School and looped down Mortlake Road, around Deakin University, the foreshore, main street, hospital, police station and then back to the School. They also stopped off at the viewing platform at Logans Beach to see if they could spot any whales.
