INDONESIAN TILE PROJECT

Mount Eliza Primary School Indonesian Tile Project

Throughout Term 3 and the start of Term 4, eighteen students were involved in making a ceramic tile sculpture as part of their Personal Futures class. Mt Eliza Secondary College made 560 tiles for the Mt Eliza Primary School so that every primary student could have their own tile. Our students spent almost two weeks at MEPS helping students cut out shapes into their tiles. The tiles were all fired back at the MESC ceramics facility.

After they were fired, our students spent many weeks decorating the tiles with coloured glazes where the terracotta clay had been cut out.  Our wonderful maintenance men, Steve Maison and Steve Majera constructed the wood and metal support structure and transported it over to the primary school. It was then concreted into position. Jodie Croft, the art teacher at Mt Eliza Primary, and myself spent two days hanging every tile. The sculpture not only looks terrific during daytime at the front of the primary school but transforms magically at night with its dedicated lighting.
