Crime & Punishment

YEAR 10 CRIME AND PUNISHMENT EXCURSION

The three Year 10 Crime and Punishment classes attended an excursion to the Old Melbourne Gaol during the first week of Term 2. It was fabulous to be able to enjoy a class outing after the last two years of cancelled activities. All classes had a tour of the Old Melbourne Gaol and were able to encounter some of the horrors experienced by the inmates since it was built in the mid-1800s.

Ms. Relf and Ms. Earl’s class participated in the role-playing activity, based on real events, where students examined a culpable driving case of a promising young man who killed two friends in a crash whilst ‘hooning’. Ms. Clark’s class experienced the legal process firsthand in Melbourne's Old City Watch House. Please see below for a report by two students from Ms. Clark’s class:

In our Year 10 Crime and Punishment class, we went to the Old Melbourne Gaol and City Watch House in the CBD. Unlike the other classes we were fortunate enough to attend the City Watch House where we were greeted by a sergeant who walked us through the Watch House. She showed us all the areas and indicated what it would have been like to be a prisoner in the Watch House, all while providing us with lots of information. After a quick detour to Melbourne Central for lunch, we were welcomed into the Old Melbourne Gaol where a guide walked us around the Gaol, highlighting its plentiful history, telling us about the types of criminals and their charges, showing us the execution grounds and providing us with lots of knowledge that we were able to use in our class work. This excursion was an amazing opportunity and lots of fun!
