Vocation Education and Training

Term 1 in the VET KLA is always action packed, with plenty of opportunities for students to develop and showcase their skills and knowledge.

Hospitality

It has been a busy term for the Hospitality students as Year 12 has been learning to make coffees and Year 11 are being introduced to the commercial kitchen.

Year 12 had the opportunity to showcase their skills at the Open Night with the new mobile coffee cart being used for the first time. The students provided coffee and hot chocolates to new and existing parents who came to the college. Kylie from Wagga Catering visited at the start of the term to teach the students the skills required to make good coffee. Students then went on a roster to set up the coffee cart and make coffees for Mater Dei staff.

Year 11 has been busy learning the foundation skills of Hospitality cooking. This includes knife skills, hygiene and Work, Health and Safety in the kitchen. They made spring rolls and chocolate mousse for the Open Night for people to have a taste of what the Hospitality students do in class. The next topic that students will be learning about is appetisers and salads.

Metal and Engineering

Our new cohort of Year 11 students has worked very well to complete their Pad saw project. The task required students to mark, cut, drill, tap, sandblast and paint a hand tool to a required tolerance. They are now developing skills in Oxy Acetylene welding to produce, pad, butt, fillet and outside corner welds on a variety of material gauges.

Year 12 has just finished their Engineering Drawing interpretation unit. This develops students' skills and knowledge in reading complex plans in accordance to Australian Standard 1100. Students then put their skills to use by using Fusion 360 to draw and 3D print their own custom design on our new Prusa printers.

Construction

Year 11 Construction has been busy in the workshop this term. They just completed a wooden mallet project that allowed students to recreate from plans. Students are now working on a SawStool project that includes a number of miter cuts and angles.

Year 12 Construction have been preparing for a concrete slab pour. Students have excavated soil for a 9x3m soil bay. Students have learnt to use profiles and string lines and fixing formwork. This slab will be poured later in the year.
