Drama

Year 9 Drama focused on the basics of movement and Drama. This term, we have learnt the skills of improvisation through games and established rapport as a class. Students then immersed themselves in the movements of Laban, understanding the power of movement for expression and meaning in performance. Students began devising a movement piece which utilised Laban’s movements to evoke a particular mood.

Year 10 Drama explored the form of Commedia dell’Arte earlier this term and devised their own performance scenes. Students got to experience creating characters through mask work and exploring the different stock characters. They also completed a research presentation task to demonstrate their understanding of the form and the stock character they would play in their group scenes.

We are now working on theatre criticism and finding ways to engage in performance activities through the digital platform Zoom. Students are also viewing productions from the National Theatre through Digital Theatre+ to enhance their understanding of performance and production elements in a professional context.

Year 11 Drama have just completed their unit focused on individual performance where they performed monologues to the class and completed a logbook detailing their process and demonstrating how they sought and acted upon peer feedback.

We are currently working on our next unit focused on the elements of production with a study of Fredrico Lorca’s spanish play The House of Bernarda Alba. Student will need to adopt the role of a director and designer and create a director’s rationale, costume designs or a set model and complete a digital logbook to detail their workings.

Year 12 Drama have spent the term working on their second major study, approaches to acting. We have been learning about the different theoretical and philosophical approaches of key theatre practitioners and workshopping their ideas on actor training. Students also completed an assessment for the Australia Drama unit by sharing a workshopped scene, verbally explaining their rationale for staging and completing an extended response.
