Music

Year 7 Music developed keyboard and ukulele skills through performances both individually, in small groups and as part of a whole class ensemble. Students created music using Soundtrap and demonstrated the varying roles of instrument layers in their compositions. Some Year 7 students have also been involved in the Music Initiative program which involves lessons as well as performing in a band. We look forward to Year 7 students developing skills on their individual instruments.

Year 8 Music further developed their keyboard performance skills through a unit on The Blues during Term 1. Students performed in pairs creating a melody based on the blues scale as well as the 12 Bar Blues Chord Progression.

Year 9 Music engaged in performance, composition and listening activities based on Traditional and Swing styles of Jazz. Students created compositions which included call and response, the swing rhythm, syncopation and improvisation. Performance repertoire included music by Postmodern Jukebox, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington.

Year 9 Rock Music formed bands and engaged in a variety of Rock music, including music by Nirvana, The Beatles, Silverchair, Queen and Metallica. We look forward to hearing the students perform at a concert later in the year.

Year 10 Music has been busy preparing individual performances. Most of these are with backing tracks. Year 10 are learning about the importance of finding the correct backing track that has their own particular instrument taken out so their performance can be focused on. A different array of styles are being focused on including rock, musical theatre and ragtime.

Year 11 Music engaged in learning activities based on Music for Small Ensembles with a focus on Rock Power Ballads. Students have performed as a whole class and as small groups creating an arrangement of a Power Ballad and are now working towards individually arranging a song in this style. This week, students embraced the new learning platform of Zoom Meetings for our lessons. It has been impressive to see students continuing with their compositions while utilising screen sharing options and composition workshops through video conferencing.

Year 12 Music are organising and finalising their performance and viva-voce programs. They are also revising the concepts of music which form the basis of aural Skills and viva-voce presentations.
