MYLNS

Brighton Secondary College is developing a Maths Task Centre (MTC) for Year 7, 8, and 9 students who may need some additional assistance with their learning. Our aim is develop their conceptual understanding in mathematics by engaging in rich tasks that are linked to concrete materials.

Zaina and Zoe are engaging a fraction  wall game. The student who shades in the most of the Fraction Wall is the winner. They roll a fraction dice and shade what they have rolled. As the game progresses students have to determine what fractions are equivalent etc.

Will and Finley are building fraction towers as well as recording their fractions in their workbook. Reflecting on their learning is important when using concrete materials or when engaging in a task that will address mathematical  misconceptions.

During our MYLNS classes there is a strong focus on using the correct mathematical language as well as using concrete materials. Every student can become numerate if they are not moved onto abstract learning too quickly as well as finding out what is the best pedagogical approach that works for our students.
