PRINCIPAL REPORT

From the College Principal

Dear parents, carers and friends,

As the term draws to a close, I would like to thank you for your continuing support of College and its activities.

It has been a challenging term for both staff, students and parents. It certainly feels more like week eight of term two than week eleven of term one. The rolling absences caused by COVID infections has certainly had an impact on both teachers and students.

There is no question that, although there have been no periods of remote learning this term, the school and the school system more generally, is experiencing something of a COVID hangover. We have certainly seen evidence of this in the reduced ability of some children to always operate effectively in the formal school environment.

After the many months over the last two years in which children were able to have full control of their personal learning environment, including getting snacks from the kitchen and taking a break when they felt they needed to, this is not at all surprising.

Certainly, my principal colleagues in many other schools have reported similar things. It will take a little time for some children to readjust to the demands of school life again, but we will support those children who require it to do so.

In spite of these challenges, the school was able to execute a very full program of events and activities this term, including the school swimming carnival, Year 7, 12 and 8 camps, and a variety of other co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. A good example of this was the outstanding “Shave for a Cure” day in which Brighton students raised nearly $15,000 for the Leukemia Foundation. This was the largest amount of money ever raised in a single event, that I'm aware of, in the school's history. It was a testament to the students’ desire to get involved to support this foundation, and of our community's preparedness to support those students.

The term finished on a real high point this week with our school open night. I would like to thank the many, many students and staff who attended last night to make it such an excellent event. The atmosphere amongst our visitors was very, very positive. The visiting children, who may well join us next year, enthusiastically engaged in the wide variety of activities on offer.

I would like to wish all families a safe and restful holiday. To the families observing Easter, Ramadan or Passover, I wish you all the best for these important events.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Minack
