Into the Music

Monday July 17th:

Into The Music

Presented by Arts Centre Melbourne

Into The Music is a short, hands-on music making workshop for kids of all ages. From lush classical to dubstep, participants will explore the technology and techniques used to create the music they hear every day. All levels of musical knowledge can be catered for; from students who have never made music before to experienced secondary and tertiary music students. Using loop-based software ACID, participants will create a song that they can take home with them. This day is being offered to schools in The City of Yarra and The City of Melbourne, and is a part of The Push Pop Up Shop at Collarts in Fitzroy, and would be a fantastic excursion for students groups especially students of music, multimedia, performing arts, media, journalism, digital arts, events management etc. I would strongly urge you and your school to consider taking up this offer. There are three sessions running on Monday, July 17th:-10-12pm, 12-2pm, 2-4pm.

Year 12 Drama Ensembles

The end of semester performances began on Tuesday night with the year 12 Drama students presenting their ensemble performances to family and friends. This performance was a part of their School Assessment Coursework (SAC) and worth the lion's share of marks for year 12 Drama. Each of the three groups presented fabulous work that explored the given theme - "The Last Days". In this piece the girls were given a scenario which required research and exploration, before threading ideas together to create an interesting piece of theatre. In this performance students also needed to demonstrate the theatrical conventions, dramatic elements and expressive & performance skills studied in VCE drama.

The girls are now keen to get started on their next performance task. Good luck with preparation of your solo performances girls!!

Year 12 Drama

Generations In Jazz 2017

On the 5th of May, the MGC sax quartet woke up bright and early (5:45 am!!) and hopped in the car – ready for the 6 hour drive to Mt Gambier, South Australia. We drove for 450 km, and when we finally reached our awesome accommodation at Mt. Gambier we got out our instruments and practiced. At around 5:30 we got in the car and headed down to the festival location for dinner. After dinner we got to watch an amazing jazz concert, featuring professional jazz instrumentalists and vocalists. We went to bed feeling very inspired, and ready to wake up early the next day to perform.

It was another early morning on Saturday, and we were all nervous and excited. After breakfast and a quick practice, we drove to the festival and walked the brisk walk to the Apple Farm, which is where we were playing. We were the second act at the Apple Farm for the day. We were allocated 10 minute in a sort-of shed, where we could rehearse. It was a great rehearsal, and we headed to the ‘green room’ feeling pumped to play.

We got up on stage and, although we were nervous, we played our pieces well. We all had fun on stage, and we were relieved to get out performance out of the way – now we could really enjoy the festival! We hung around the Apple Farm for a while before heading over to the main pavilion – we were awed (if not a little intimidated) by the amazing Division 1 school bands. We spent the rest of the morning checking out other school bands and enjoying the jazz. We grabbed lunch and then half of us left the festival to check out the town and see the Mt. Gambier sights. We all reunited back at the house in the afternoon, and had a quick break before heading straight back out to see the Division 1 vocal groups. Then we had dinner and went straight to the second concert of the weekend. The concert was fantastic and we had the chance to see awesome musicians like James Morrison and Wycliffe Gordon, as well as amazing high school students, who were nominated for an elite jazz scholarship.

On Sunday we woke up, packed up and went to the festival area to go to our special workshops. The saxophone workshop was really informative and we learnt so much. After our workshop we picked up our lunch and headed back to the main pavilion, where we watched the Division 1 Superband rehearse. Then, we got in the car and began the long drive home.

We all really enjoyed our time at Generations in Jazz, and we ended up coming in 4th place out of 25 in our division!

Dance Night

Dance Night is coming up on the 18th and 19th of May at 6:30PM! Tickets are now available through the events page on the MGC website.

Dance Night is a ‘concert’ where the students involved in dance have the opportunity to perform their learnt and choreographed works for parents/family and friends.
