Principal's Report

Staff Development

At Staughton, our mantra with staff and students is to have high expectations of improvement, and to provide high levels of support in order to get there. As part of this process, we have a student free day on Thursday, August 2. Staff will be working hard to improve their practice and their knowledge of students.

Recently, we received our collated student surveys back from the Department of Education. In these surveys, students rate the learning environment, their own learning experience, and the general school climate. I am very pleased that in every single category, students rated their experience higher than last year. This is an extraordinary result. It is not due so much to the teachers or the students by themselves, but more to the relationship and partnership between them. Each week, all of the Principals visit many classrooms in the school. On more and more occasions, we are seeing students being able to describe where they are at in their learning, where they are going, and how they might get there. This is a strong step in the direction of them becoming lifelong effective learners.

We will continue to look for ways to keep improving. I am personally working with a group of student leaders this term to continue to visit classrooms to talk about what students say great learning looks like. Our student leaders will be presenting this to our teaching staff at the beginning of next term.
