Year 7 Wellbeing Day
We have hit the ground running in Term 3 in Wellbeing. On Monday 18/7/2016, we ran the Year 7 Wellbeing Day in conjunction with Knox Youth Services and Headspace Knox.
All Year 7 students participated in 3 different workshops covering several topics including ‘Resilience’, ‘Stress Management’, ‘Seeking Support’ and ‘What is Mental Health’. We were very fortunate to have Kate, Hannah and Kate from Knox Youth Services and Andrew from Headspace donate their time to facilitate the sessions. They were impressed with the level of engagement and interaction of all the students.
The fourth rotating period saw the students participate in mini games and team work activities in the gym, run by the PE faculty with support from other year level PE students. This enabled some senior students the chance to engage in a positive activity with the Year 7’s and help create bonds that they normally would not have made. This will hopefully help with the Year 7’s feeling more comfortable at school, knowing a few more familiar faces at the senior level.
The students were also given the challenge of a 21 day gratitude activity, where every day they must think of three things they are grateful for. The theory is that it takes 21 days to make a habit and we can often be too negative so this helps with having a more positive mind frame. The students learnt some breathing exercises to help deal with stress and anxiety and they were encouraged to seek help when needed.
There was a competition running throughout the day for the ‘most engaged class’ and the winner was…….. 7C! 7C will received a free lunch last Wednesday at the Wellbeing Centre.
The Wellbeing Team would like to thank the staff from Knox Youth Services and Headspace as well as the PE faculty in particular Andrew Potter for allowing the Year 7’s to use the gym all day.
In conjunction with Student Voice, we are currently organising International Youth Day on the 12/8/16 and Diversity Week (15/8/16 to 18/8/16). There will be lots of fun activities during this time, celebrating young people and diversity.
We look forward to a busy but fun term!
