Welcome
How can a group of girls look so happy at 8am in the middle of winter? That's because these girls have all just arrived from Japan!
Seven Japanese students are visiting Fairhills High School through KSKK, the Youth Organisation Fairhills has been involved with exchanges for over thirty years.
Led by Ms Ayumi Tominaga the girls have already met their host students, partied with the Principal, and had the honour of meeting Mr Nick Wakeling MP who gave an impressive impromptu speech in Japanese. Not bad for being in the country for just five hours!
We look forward to lots of fun ahead with our visitors, learning about Japanese and Australian culture together. Thank you to the families who are hosting them.
The students are at Fairhills from Wednesday 27th July to Thursday 11th August. Please make them feel welcome and say 'Konnichi wa'.

Japanese Character Bento Lunch Making
At the end of last semester, some of our Year 8 and 9 students participated in making a Japanese Character Bento so-called “KYARA-BEN”, as part of Japanese culture and language learning.
In kindergartens and primary schools in Japan, it is very popular to bring a lunch box decorated into a cartoon character with nutritious food, such as steamed rice, seaweed, vegetables, eggs, cooked meats, cheese, etc.
Year 8 and 9 students have learned the name of ingredients in Japanese and to use Japanese language to describe how often they eat each ingredient, and how they liked each ingredient. Students also drew a plan of how they want to decorate their Bento box. They were encouraged to use their imagination to select appropriate ingredients according to the colour of the food when designing a picture. This was done to avoid using food colouring.
All the participants did a fantastic job to create many cute “KYARA-BEN”, and appreciated a healthy lunch afterwards!
