VET Presentations to PLP Classrooms

As students are currently finding places to do their work experience I have attended classes in weeks 5 and 6 to share information about Vocational Education and Training. Students have been informed about VET pathways and the many courses and opportunities to begin their future pathways and gain qualifications while still in high school. Students have been encouraged to find work experience that fits the industry they believe they want to pursue for a career pathway. The presentation has been attached to Daymap for students to use if they require further information. Some useful websites are included and students can make an appointment with myself to discuss Career Pathways and options and subjects for Year 11 and 12.

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Students from many VET courses have the opportunity to apply for a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. Some VET courses require students to do placement to gain ‘hands on’ experience and develop skills for the industry. Whilst out on placement employers have the opportunity to train hard working and dedicated students that they may want to offer an apprenticeship/traineeship to. There are currently nine students at Aberfoyle Park High School who are completing an apprenticeship and we now have five more students who have been offered this opportunity.

Evan is now completing a School-Based Apprenticeship in Certificate III Automotive Servicing. His goal is to become a fully qualified mechanic. Last year whilst completing the Certificate II Auto Servicing Technology course with Noarlunga TafeSA he applied to complete structured workplace learning with a car dealer at Reynella. With his great enthusiasm and demonstrated knowledge and skills gained from his course he was offered a School-Based Apprenticeship. Evan completed Year 11 and all his compulsory subjects so that this year he can work fulltime in a flexible school-based apprenticeship.

Brad and Riley have both gone into School-Based Apprenticeships undertaking a Certificate III in Carpentry. Brad utilised Housing Industry Association (HIA) and has been chosen as an apprentice after being interviewed by them and successfully completing their process. He is now working four days per week with a host employer and attends school one day to complete two subjects. Riley has found his apprenticeship through work placement from his Certificate II VET Construction course completed last year. His employer was extremely pleased with his attitude and enthusiasm, so much that he wanted him to continue. Like Brad, he is also working four days per week and attending school to complete two subjects.

Will is going into a School-Based Apprenticeship doing a Certificate III in Electrical. Again, from doing placement with his VET course the employer was so impressed with his skills and willingness to learn that he offered him an apprenticeship. Will attends school two days per week and is completing two subjects. Cooper also, from work placement after completing the Certificate II Construction course, has found an apprenticeship with an Electrical Refrigeration and Airconditioning company. Cooper is working four days per week and attends school so he can complete Year 12 music and remain in his band. Cooper is in a School-Based Apprenticeship completing Certificate IV in Electrotechnology Refrigeration and Air-conditioning.
