ETHICS OLYMPIAD: IGNITE STUDENTS MAKE INTERNATIONAL FINAL

The International Final of the Middle School Ethics Olympiad was held on 23 February. We were exceptionally proud that one of our teams were invited to this final, following the achievement of their silver medal (second place) in 2022. Our second team only narrowly missed out, being awarded the bronze medal (third place).

The International Final was held via zoom, allowing students to compete with schools around the globe. The judges were notable professors in Philosophy and Ethics and the students thoroughly enjoyed discussions with both the competing students and the judges.

Some of the ethical questions students had to answer during the rounds included:

  • We think helping is a good thing. Is it good to help when a friend has to do something as punishment?
  • What is the difference between providing reasons for someone to do something, and bullying them to do something?
  • What is the fairest way to define a single household?

Our students presented themselves exceptionally well and were awarded 19th place out of the 40 competing schools. They were the only South Australian team to make the top 20. The students in the International Final were Abinav Murugappa, Jessica Thornhill, Priya Vemparala, Ameerah Ankliss and Tenzin Sims.

Our Senior Ethics Team are currently preparing for the 2023 Senior School Ethics Olympiad which is held in May. We congratulate all students for challenging themselves to participate in the Ethics Olympiad events and for their continued legacy of success.
