Art
Wow! What a busy month we have had in the Art Room! We have grown so much as a school we now proudly boast two Art Rooms to accommodate all our interested learners.
In the Prep classes, we have been learning all about ourselves and how we can reflect who we are in the art work we produce. Students have enjoyed creating self-portraits as well as drawing their families as part of their heritage. We made adorable house collages for our family drawings to be presented on and worked on our glueing and pasting skills.
The Grade 1 and 2 students have also been learning about themselves through their artwork and have reflected on who they are as artists. We also focussed on different emotions and how we can portray them in our facial features when we draw. This particular activity also had us focus on the use of colour in various artworks and how it can invoke different emotions and feelings. The students created polaroid self-portraits showcasing 4 different emotions. It was fun to see how our faces change, particularly our mouths and eyebrows when our emotions change. In the last two weeks we have been using oil pastels to create beautiful garden pictures.
Grade 3 and 4 students have been busy creating self-portraits of themselves wearing sunglasses. They enjoyed painting a watercolour background of their favourite place to visit and then sketched a close up portrait of their face and shoulders. This activity allowed the students to focus on making the proportions of their face more accurate without having to draw their eyes, thus isolating an important skill of sketching face shapes, hair and noses. The last two weeks, students have been refining their fine motor skills by drawing the first letter of their name with a fineliner pen. They have been challenged to draw intricate patterns around their letter to bring meaning to the negative space.
Grade 5 and 6 students have been discussing and investigating how artworks can express their identity. They have studied a variety of artworks and discussed the concepts of similarities and differences between people and how artists can show this. They spent time creating a collage to form the background of a self-portrait. This portrait allowed the students to look at their facial features and try to more accurately draw each component using tracing paper over a photo. They then explored pattern work over the top of their portrait with colour pencils creating a more abstract feel to their pieces. In the last two weeks the students have begun creating digital media portfolios as they learn about photography.
Well done to all of our Grayling Artists!
