Grade 5 - 6

It has been another fantastic two weeks in the 5/6 Learning Community! We have continued on displaying our PROUD values with our learning and by engaging in a range of activities. Well done Grade 5s and 6s!

Reading

Students have been exploring different comprehension strategies when reading texts and exploring these by using the readers notebook. They have been annotating texts that display their thoughts and wonderings and using these annotations to write a journal entry about their text. Students have practiced activating their prior knowledge before reading a text and to practice visualizing texts when reading to further their understanding of the text. The readers' notebook activities have encouraged students to think deeply about what they read and has fostered some amazing discussion in the classroom from our students!

Writing

Narratives has been the writing genre in focus for the last two weeks. Students have experimented with different techniques they can use to expand their writing, making it more engaging to the reader. They have worked on editing their work and rewriting paragraphs to improve their narratives. Students have also been practicing correct sentence structure to create a solid platform for students to extend their writing. Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals!

Mathematics

Over the last two weeks, students have worked on a range of math topics including fractions, length and area, angles and collecting and analyzing data. Students have learned different ways to compare fractions and written strategies we can use to add them or subtract them. They have also explored how to calculate the perimeter or area of different 2D shapes and how we can apply addition and multiplication strategies to these problems. Students have also been applying their knowledge of the different types of angles to help them identify missing angles. Data collection and analysis has had the students engaging in different experiments with varying factors that may affect the likelihood of outcomes.

Humanities and Spanish

Grade 5 and 6 have continued focusing on Civics and Citizenship in Australia. Grade 5s explored different community groups and how groups of people with shared beliefs can work together to achieve a civic goal. Grade 6s have been focusing on the different levels of government, federal, state and local. They have also been learning the roles and responsibilities of elected representatives and those who vote in Australia. Students have continued learning Spanish for the last two weeks. They have been working on different phrases in common speech that can assist in everyday conversations while also looking into countries in South America that are Latin speaking such as Peru.

Interschool sport

We have had our first ever interschool sport round in Grayling history! It was an eventful day with all students competing in a range of sports against Hampton Park Primary School. Students played Netball, Soccer, T-Ball, Cricket and Volleyball. There were some fantastic matches with our girl's netball and boys cricket teams coming away with dominant victories while our boys soccer team clinched a last minute winner from our hatrick hero Malakye. The most impressive feat of the day however, was in how the students conducted themselves, displaying our school values in all the fixtures. PROUD!

 NAPLAN

NAPLAN is now fast approaching next week! Students have continued preparing by sitting practice tests and dissecting different questions from previous NAPLANS. They have been working really hard and we are looking forward to watching them try their best next week!
