Grade 2

Cross Country

On Monday the 6th of March the whole school participated in cross country. Students ran with their age groups, Under 8’s ran a 1km race & Under 7’s ran a 500m race. All students participated and had a great time. We would like to say a big congratulations to the Grade 2’s on completing your races as well as thank you for the beautiful behaviour you all displayed while waiting for your races.

Writing

In writing we have been finishing off our recount topic. Week 5 saw us participate in a mystery bag guessing game on Monday. We then used our experience to write our recount for the week. We focused on breaking down the structure and ensuring that we were adding lots of detailed events into our writing. In Week 6 we completed our recount post write, where the students wrote about their experiences at Cross Country on the 6th of March. The Grade 2’s have done a wonderful job with our first writing topic and we are excited to move onto Procedure writing in the coming weeks.

Reading

The Grade 2’s have been focusing on learning about the types of texts they can read, the different genres that they may see in our library, and how to read using fluency and monitoring. Students have been practising these skills using a range of different tasks and activities. They have had a chance to:

  • Silent read
  • Partner read
  • Wushka read.
  • Conference with the teacher
  • Complete worksheets

The students have shown a great love for reading during these first few weeks and have been excited to show their home reading journals to us all.

Maths

Over the past 2 weeks the Grade 2’s have been looking at Place Value during Maths. In Week 5 we looked at how to recognise, model, represent and order numbers up to 1000. This meant using a lot of manipulatives such as MAB, and unifix to help assist them in representing the numbers. In Week 6 we focused on partitioning our numbers up to 1000. This means the students were breaking down numbers into their place value units. For example 319 is 3 hundreds, 1 ten, and 9 ones. The students were able to participate in a lot of hands-on activities to help assist them.

Humanities

For our Humanities topic this term, students are learning all about history, including comparing the past and present and students’ family histories.

In week 7 & 8, we will be looking at family artefacts. For this lesson, we are asking that you please help your child choose an artefact from your family. It can be any item that has been in the family for a long time, the more decades the better!

Examples of family artefacts:

  • Stuffed toy
  • Trophy/Medal
  • Souvenir from a holiday
  • Piece of clothing
  • Family photo
  • Family recipe
  • Olden style game
  • Artwork

If you don’t want to send your special item to school, please take a photo and your child can bring that instead. It would be great if you could have a chat with your child about what the artefact is and why it is special to your family before they bring it in.

Please start sending your family artefact in with your child in a bag with their name on it. The students will need their artefacts by Monday the 13th of March.
