Prep
Reading
The last 2 weeks, prep students have learnt the Group 2 sounds! - c, k, e, h, r, m, d. Look out for the new list stuck into their book of lists!
They have been enjoying listening for the sounds in words and identifying where the sound is within the word. They are also starting to learn how to segment sounds in a word and the early stages of blending them together. We are continuing to practise our letter formation through chalk writing, playdoh, pom poms, blocks, water writing and lots of other fun activities. Onto Group 3!
Writing
Prep students have continued to explore all of the fundamental writing skills that will help them become mini authors as they go through their primary years. Students have practiced writing their name with different craft experiences, including small ripped pieces of paper and rainbow writing! In the short time we’ve been practicing our name, students are able to recognise and write the letters in their name quickly! We have also practiced tracing and copying sentences, improving our pencil grip by using the steps - nip, flip and grip. At the end of the week we practice tracing and writing the sounds we’ve learnt in handwriting, we have written the sounds p, n, c and k.
Maths
In Maths, we have extended our knowledge of numbers! We are now able to count from 1-12 confidently and can show the value of these numbers through collections, fingers, tally marks, and ten frames. The students explored their number knowledge through hands-on activities this week where they practiced matching collections to numerals and number names.
We have also been using our number and counting skills to subitise numbers. Subitising is being able to look at a small number of objects and instantly recognise how many objects there are without needing to count. Students enjoyed different rotations and using objects such as cards, dice and pegs to practice subitising.
Other
In Integrated this past fortnight we have continued exploring our Zones of Regulation, with a focus on managing and regulating our feelings. The students learnt that it is okay to be in the blue, red and yellow zones throughout the day but it is important that we recognise these feelings and learn strategies to assist with self-regulating. Some strategies discussed include deep breathing, drinking water, cuddling a soft toy, speaking to a teacher and/ or friend, counting to 10 etc. Students will practice these strategies when they require assistance with calming down and returning to the green zone.
We made use of our ‘Build a Word’ folders again in Spelling this past fortnight with the addition of new letters/ sounds. Sounds c, k, e, h, r, m, and d were added to assist with spelling and forming words such as hat, mad, hen, red, sick, cat etc.
Our Preps also participated in their very first cross-country event on Monday the 6th of March. Their enthusiasm and sportsmanship were admirable and we couldn’t be prouder of all of our Preps who participated and gave it a go. As you can see in the photos, they had lots of fun and all demonstrated our school value of Daring.
