Visual Arts

Mrs Borg

Students in Grade Three and Four have been busy this term creating 'Pop Art,' inspired by artist Andy Warhol. They began with the most popular art of all, 'Emojis!' and had to recreate an emoji which best represented how they were feeling.

Students in Grade Four then continued with the 'Pop Art' theme to create an Onomatopoeia (a sound represented as a word), inspired by comic books and artist Roy Lichtenstein. Students in Grade Three followed a similar theme but created a name tag instead, using only the three primary colours (red, blue and yellow).

Students in Grade Four are currently working on making papier mâché donuts, which is another 'Pop Art' activity. They have recently completed the modelling of the donuts and will continue decorating them next term, so stay tuned!

Students in Grade Three also completed their final pop art piece for the term, which was handprints and focusing on contrasting colours, also inspired by artist Andy Warhol.

Finally, the Preps have been learning about Primary Colours and what happens when we mix them together. They experimented with using paint to mix primary colours together to make the Secondary Colours and appeared to have a good understanding of this. They completed the term by creating artwork using the primary and secondary colours including 'Mondrian Hearts' (inspired by artist Piet Mondrian).

The first term has been amazing and full of creativity for Years 1 and 2. Pupils have studied the beautiful children's book The Milk of Dreams and the contemporary Mexican artist Louisa Carrington's artwork. Students used a surrealist approach to build their amazing creatures. They are getting ready to paint their fanciful creatures on a big movable mural.

Students in Grade 5 and 6 started their term with some drawing tutorials - first a cute Valentine's dragon, then a realistic human face. They learned about proportions of the human head, and where to place face features to create a balanced and natural looking face.

We then then completed a study of the colour wheel and various colour theories. They experimented with mixing primary coloured paint to create secondary and tertiary colours in a blended wheel. They also learned about creating tinted and shaded colours using black and white as part of the colour mixing activity. We also discussed and practiced the correct ways to use and care for a paint brush.

At the end of the term students in Grade 5 began looking at an Australian outback habitat, and Grade 6 students began study of coral reef biomes. Both grades completed small samplers of a blended painted background before moving on to begin their blended background of their larger scale work. This project will continue into term 2.
