Year 1/2 Report

Term 1 2023

The grade 1/2s have had a jam-packed Term One with lots of exciting learning experiences for all.

Numeracy

During Term 1, students consolidated their understanding of counting to and from 100. They built on skills such as identifying more and less of a number, automatic recall and counting forwards and backwards. Students practiced sip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s to 100 and beyond with the use of physical materials, 100s charts, singing skip counting songs and playing games. They learnt how to use objects to represent groups of 1s, 10s and 100s. Students also learnt how to write one, two and three-digit numbers as written words. Number talks were completed weekly to give students an opportunity to explain their understanding of the numeracy concepts being taught.

Literacy

In Reading this term the focus was on developing students’ independence with their reading. Students developed the skills of selecting just right books and worked on building their reading stamina, which has been great to see. All grades have made significant growth in the amount of time students are reading independently. Students explored the reading skills of solving tricky words, monitoring for meaning and accuracy, reading fluently and with expression. Students read one-on-one with their teachers and in small groups and received feedback to help develop their reading ability.

In Writing students have explored the text structure and language features in the form of diary entries. They practiced using time connectives in their writing and including the 5Ws of What, Where, When, Who and Why to add more detail. Students have begun learning how to work through the initial stages of the writing process as well, focusing on the planning and drafting stages. They have engaged in lots of language experience activities which helped them develop vocabulary for their writing. Spelling strategies, high frequency words, letter combinations and phonics have been an ongoing focus throughout the term.

Inquiry

During our Term 1 Inquiry unit students have explored the question of “How can I make good choices?” Through this question and subsequent exploration, students were able to make connections between how having healthy bodies and minds helps us to create healthy and happy relationships. They developed an understanding of and ability to describe how to stay healthy in a range of environments. Students used photos of when they were babies and of themselves now to identify and explain the physical changes that have occurred over time. Through-out their participation in our Inquiry unit, students were able to develop the skills of cooperating with others, making comparisons, taking turns, recording information and presenting their findings.

Harmony Day

For Harmony Day this term students had a lot of fun participating in celebrating their culture and heritage by dressing up in outfits and completing various activities that represented their heritage.
