Prep Report

Well done to all the Prep students for completing their first term at school! Everyone has worked very hard and have settled into their new classroom routines. We would like to give a special thank you to all the parents and carers who have supported their children with their learning and made the transition to school enjoyable.

Literacy

In Reading, students have continued making connections between letters and sounds. They have participated in reading books, poems and chants daily as well as developing their independent reading stamina. Students have continued to revise the concepts about print – front and back cover, spine, where to begin reading and the direction in which we read. In Writing, students have been writing daily, learning to draw a picture as a plan for their writing and consolidated their understanding of writing conventions (moving left to right across a page and from top to bottom). Students have been focusing on recording the sounds they hear in words and attempting to write the beginning, middle and end sounds in words. In Handwriting, students will continue to improve their fine motor skills, pencil grip and posture. In Speaking and Listening, students have participated in oral language experiences to support them in speaking about their writing and generating ideas to write about.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students have consolidated their understanding of counting forwards and backwards to 20 using hands on materials, playing games, singing counting songs and taking part in daily fluency activities. There has been an explicit focus on writing numbers with the correct formation and counting using one-to-one correspondence. Students learnt to sort objects into groups before creating simple patterns using a range of materials. Towards the end of the term, students learnt about events that occur in the daytime and nighttime and how to sequence the events in their school day. They also learnt the days of the week, practised naming the days that come before and after certain days and how to sequence the days in the correct order.

SEL

In Social and Emotional Learning, students learnt about the emotions from the Mindful Aus program. The emotions; joy, fear, disgust, surprise, sadness and anger were explored through role plays and activities. Students discussed how to identify these emotions, what they look and feel like and developed strategies they they can use to deal with these emotions.
