PREP:

Students in Prep have been enjoying 'games' and activities centered on focus and working in teams as part of a unit based around helping them to settle into the routines and expected behaviours of school and making new friends.

We have also explored different ways of telling stories, and have enjoyed listening and watching different stories each week.

Later in the term, students began discussing fairy tales they know and familiar standard characters in these types of stories. They have practiced rehearsing a performance of the 3 Little Pigs.

GRADES 1-6

Students in these grades have all explored the concept of fairy tales - discussing and identifying stories they know and archetypal characters found in these tales. They have enjoyed seeing examples of live performances.

In Grade 1 and 2 students have focused on practicing changing their faces and bodies to become a fairy tale character. They have participated in facial expression and movement workshops using fairy tale archetypes in preparation for their end of term performances. Students in these grades have spent a few weeks rehearsing their own versions of the 3 Little Pigs, including choosing stagecraft elements such as set items, props and costuming. In week 9, student performed their plays to the class with great success - showing a clear understanding of the structure and conventions of a fairy tale story and use of the expressive skills facial expression and movement.

In Grade 3 and 4, students were presented with a selection of fairy tale scripts to choose from and worked in groups to rehearse their play and prepare stagecraft choices such as set, costumes and props. Throughout the term students participated in expressive skills workshops relating to facial expression, voice and movement exploring how these can be manipulated to create fairy tale characters included in their plays.

Students performed their plays in week 9 to their class, demonstrating these skills and knowledge of the fairy tale genre.

In Grade 5 & 6, students participated in story telling workshops where they practiced creating stories as a class and in groups. They were then given the opportunity to devise their own fairy tales to turn into a play. Students worked in small groups to write a story, then script before moving into the rehearsal phase. They also planned for the use of stagecraft elements including set, costumes and props. They too throughout the term participated in various expressive skill building workshops to improve their acting - focusing on voice, movement, gesture and facial expression to aid the development of characters in performance.

Students performed their pieces during week 9 to their classes. They demonstrated an understanding of the fairy tale genre, and show of their narrative development skills as well as challenging their ability to use the 4 expressive skills voice, movement, gesture and facial expression.
